Df03 Or Db01

Recommended Posts

When i get payed in a few weeks iam going to order my 1st r/c car in nearly 20 years.

Up until a couple of days ago i was definately going to get a DB01 but i do like the look of the DF03 cars especially the DI.

The 1 thing that still plays on my mind with the Db01 is the fact its belt driven.Should this put me off?

Can any owners of these cars let me know how good or bad these cars to help me decide.

DB01 >>>> DF03

In many ways, dont let the belt drive fool you its incredibly well designed and completely covered so you could use it in the most rocky/dusty conditions and never have to worry about stones and grit destroying your drive train.

For a better opinion just check the Oople reviews.

If I was in your position id go with a DB01, they are bullet proof and IMO the best RC car I have ever owned and yes that is compared to my Rough Rider and HPI Baja SS :]

The DB-01 sealed belt drive is nothing to worry about. If you search through the old posts there were several threads about problems using a high power motor in a DF-03 and stripping the gears.

I've only had 2 real issues with my DB-01. For some reason the front 1-way seems to be slipping under heavy loads (I have no idea why this is happening) and after adding all the hop-up the cost of the thing has gotten way up there. If you can find a DB-01R. It cost more up front but you are getting a really good deal on the upgrades.

I also read a lot of people claiming problems with stripped gears when using high powered motors in a DF-03. I am a self proclaimed r/c novice and have been bashing with a DF-03 and Mamba Max 5700kv for months with no issues. I have stripped down and rebuilt the gear box a number of times and can't see any significant wear.

I can vouch for the DF-03 being one cool car but I would still be keen to own a DB-01. I guess as it's going to be the first car you've owned in 20 years then you are going to be impressed whichever model you go for!?

I will have to have a look at the df03 ms.

I was looking at a Db01r on e-bay i think they go for just under 200 quid wich sounds quite expensive but like stu22 says really good upgrades.Only thing with it is i dont think it comes with a body and i dont know if they can be bought seperately.Looking like the Db01 is going to be the car i will order.

All of you have been a great help thanks guys.

DB01R no question!!!

The DB01 is brillianr but you will need to spend a few £’s to upgrade it to be a bit more competitive. A slipper clutch, front UJs and TRF dampers and the carbon reinforced parts tree is all you need, but for the cost of all that you might as well get the DB0R which has more than all these hop ups anyway.

The DF03 is good and the MS version also but its weaker in places and very tight to get stuff in the chassis, the DB01 just feels more solid.

I run a 5.5t EZ run Brushless in mine with Yeah racing 3200 20c Lipo's and it fly’s. I ran it with the same set up with plastic dampers and they were useless.

You can bash it too so don’t worry about the belt drive, I run a TA05 which uses the same drive train but it’s completely open on a carpet that could do with a Hoover and it will run outside with no problems so don’t worry about the DB01 drivetrain it well protected.

The rear diff can be an issue with high power motors and most people suggest upgrading to the 501x diff but if built correctly and adjusted in the bedding in stage the stock diff is fine. Also take note and use the manual stated rubber cement and not super glue. I used Unibond Extreme Glue which can be found in B&Q. Super glue is too brittle, cracks and it doesn’t like the grease, so your diff plates will soon loosen and slip if superglue is used.

Any Q’s send me a PM

Later

DB01-R does NOT include the following items

- Body

- Wing

- Wheels

- Tires

That being said, the only place you can get bodies for the DB01 chassis right now is TamiyaUSA. The catch is that they will only ship within the USA. The rest of the world has been out of both Durga and Baldre bodies for some time now.

The Durga body does not include a wing or decals. It's part number is 1825507, and the stickers are 9495524. The kit wing is 53984. You also have the option to use the TRF511 front & rear wing set 54134.

The Baldre body is sold as a kit and includes everything. It's part number is 51338.

Just like to mention if you can get either the Durga or Baldre shell go for the Baldre, yes it dosnt look as sleek as the Durga but it has a better fit and has more room under the shell to allow more air flow and fit larger components. I own both shells and my DB01 is brushless equipped and the Durga shell has trouble fitting neatly ontop of it all and always sits at a slant and the rear of it has about 1/2 an inch gap where the ESC is. The Baldre shell has no such problems though. I also reamed out a couple of holes just about where the motor sits to improve air flow and repoistioned the arial hole to the side not in the centre of the roof like the kit sujests as every time you roll it you will keep snapping the arial. :]

Mine fits fine, i like the look of the Durga better but the Baldre does has more room. (now a bit bashed but with TRF dampers)

+1 for the DB01 or DB01R. Epic cars for the money. Drive train is far stronger than you'd think.

Hobbyco in Sydney has the Baldre kit on special for $239, which is actually a really good price for such a high spec car from a retail store. In contrast they have the Durga for $319!

My personal preference is that the Durga looks better, but the Baldre is supposed to be the better handling track shell.

Just like on the other thread. You where looking at Boomerang, DF-02 and DB-01. I am lucky enough to have all 3. I skipped the DF-03 as it seems DB-01 is much more different from Boomerang and DF-02. Belt drive, etc.

Here is my DB-01 w/ frankenstein stickers from different buggies (Hornet, Boomerang and DF-02) to give it an old school look.

It really drives differently. Silent, absorbs the bumps well, etc. I actually retuned my son's DF-02 because of this, as the DB-01 is big droop, soft suspension, its drives great on rough roads. Its a pain to disassemble though, unlike the DF-02 where everything is a few unscrews away.

Hi!

I just bought a DB01R with 2 Durga bodies and one Baldre body. I already painted one Durga and one Baldre body so if you want a Durga body you can have mine. I also have a wing and decals for it.

Did all 3 bodies come supplied with your db01r or did you buy them?

I bought them all seperately as there is no body included in the DB01R. The Baldre is available as Bodyset but the Durga has to be bought seperately. Shell, wing and decals.

I agree, the Durga body kits are very hard to get, which is a shame. I ordered a bodyshell and wing for my DB01 through my L.H.S mid last year for about AUD$35 and it was on order for about 9-10 weeks, it eventually arrived from Japan. I almost forgot I had placed the order it took so long...

I came close to buying quite a few non-genuine bodyshells from Kamtec (UK), but they obviously are not selling anymore.

Early December '09 I emailed a Hong Kong seller to keep me posted when they will be getting the Durga shells in (as having two is not enough :D In the reply they said that the DB01R has been selling poorly because the body kits for them are so hard to come by. I am still waiting to hear from them...

I hope Tamiya understand that there is a demand for them, as it is such a lovely looking buggy

I dont know why they dont just sell the db01r with 1 of the body kits.Just add a little more on the price.

If the durga body is more popular they should sell it with that.Atleast if the buyer wants a baldre body he/she can still use the car while he trys to get hold of 1.

I personally want a baldre body kit but i would gladdly pay another £20 - £30 on top of the price of the db01r if it came with either body kits.Tamiya would sell loads more of these cars i am sure.
