Alloy Parts For 2010 Sand Scorcher: Thoughts?

Recommended Posts

Well, my Haas VF-3 vertical mill will be here in a week or so, and the R/C shop starts up officially. I just got my 2010 SS (Yeehaw!!) and will be doing some parts for it. So, this is the place to let me know what you chaps want! The most requested items will likely appear shortly, so talk to me! Cheers, Chris, Rogue Element Components

I think the main wants for most would be butterfly style chassis' (a la Twinset, Cherrybomb and Rad22Rad SRB chassis'), 3 piece alloy wheels and possibly light buckets. I also remember someone asking about rear wheels that could use the Sandblaster Jr tires so I'm pretty sure there might be some interest for custom wheels too.

Not exactly an avalanche! Based on the lack of response, partially due to my thread getting shifted to 'Sales & Trades' when it is not a sale/trade thread (Except according to some technical board policeman), I won't bother. Sorry to go all real-life on everyone, but when so many people decry the lack of parts for vintage vehicles, I kinda expect less apathetic treatment when I will have a shop and look to make decent parts you chaps want for a fair price (Silly me.) I must assume you're all happy with what's already available? Chris

If you'd have joined in the discussion already under way, your post might not have been treated like a trade ad;

From personal experience though, you're better off coming up with a product first, otherwise you'll end up with requests to re-make every SRB part in alu

Showing and producing what you can do is far easier than telling people what they want isn't possible.

Wheels, chassis, bumpers, motor/gear covers, diffs, body posts have all been in production/demand for some time now, so that only really leaves rear swingarms, driveshafts, front suspension or a CNC'd gearbox.

A scale rear VW suspension kit that fits the SRB would be high on my list if someone made it.

A gearcover for the pinion and spur in alloy that would cover my DF03 slipper clutch in SRB setup. Motor cover that is suitable for brushless, no holes on the backside, instead a slot at the top for the 3 wires to exit from.

Then there's bar work which would be less milling and more bending and welding. Nerf bars, nudge bars on the front, scorcher boxart front bumpers, rear cages. Or even a full bolt on rollcage that goes from the front of the buggy to the rear and includes the roll over hoop and rear cage all in one piece (Buggy Champ and Super Champ). 6 point roll cage for the Scorcher. These double as being scale bars as well as adding strength to the front towers and chassis plate (think Kyosho Javelin style on SRB chassis).

Spare tyre mounts for the rear roof or above the gearbox.

Alloy Headlight buckets suitable for LEDS, Spotlights suitable for LEDs (wires run throught middle of the mounting screw). Rear tail light buckets that would also accept LEDs, in Beetle and buggy styles. I do really like lit models.

Alloy wing mirrors and door handles (has gotta be stronger than the plastic ones), interior alloy rear vision mirror (mounts to that 6 point roll cage).

Or how about a scale VW boxer 4 engine blank that will fit neatly around the back of the gearbox and hide the gearbox somewhat to make the rear end look more scale.

Scale wings and mounts for the Beetle or SRB buggys (have a quick look on google images, some nice ones on real buggys).

The best way really is to look at the real thing, see what is missing from the kit that would make it look more scale and you can't go too far wrong.

See? There's some ideas, not so hard! I'd love to do tubework, but I'll focus mostly on machined parts for now. I am planning an engine for the back, reading up on those as we speak. Suspension is entirely plausible, I'll look up stock VW info, even though I thought Tamiya already made it fairly accurate? A gearbox seems natural, I've some thought on a few changes for those, and the BL motor cover, light buckets, and a lot of those things are great possibilities, I must say! I don't lack imagination, but wanted to hear from you gents what had the most appeal as opposed to just making my own things & saying take it or leave it. My thanks for contributions to this thread guys, here's to hoping a few goodies come to fruition. Chris

- CRP did a wide front end, you could do either 3/8ths of an inch or half an inch wider. The half inch required a wider chassis and of course both require the longer front suspension tubes

- Also a set of rear axels that allow the rear track to go about half an inch wider

- CRP rear cage allowing the use of an RCH mono shock or dual other longer shocks

- Rear stabiliser used with above

- MRP (I think) they did an interesting hopup to allow various gearing options

Its all pretty specialist and the aim is to make the SRB race capable.

Look forward to seeing what you come up with.

IMHO - The tamiya club forum has slowed right down, you need to be more patient than say 2 years ago.

Good luck.

Isn't there, like, 2,618,422 members or such-like? Chris

According to the tally on the homepage, there's 32477, but that doesn't mean they all visit every day :(

Or at all -- Most members never even visit the forum.

Put me down for some scale LED light buckets B)

Chris, I'm still hoping for Kyosho Scorpion style rear suspension.

Oh yeah! I second that

I think this would be considered 'trailing arm' type suspension? Didn't A&L do one of these back in the day?
