As i have said on another post i have just bought a 2nd hand Baja Champ.First of all i am going to fit bearings and then look at getting a faster motor.

I havnt got much money to spend at the moment so was looking at buying a Ansmann Clash motor for it.

I dont need the car to be super fast it will only be used for racing against my son and his mates on waste land near by.

Am i wasting my time buying 1 of these motors? are they as bad as people say?

What is the best cheap alternative?

Yes, they really are as bad as people say. For a TL01 chassis, you can't beat a Tamiya BZ motor. 23 turns (which is about as low as you can go on a TL01) and more than fast enough. I have one in mine!

I'd avoid not only the Ansmann motors but also the Venom Fireballs as well. I've not tried the the Yokomo motors that are being sold on CML at the moment.

Failing that see what 23 turn motors you can find on Ebay if you're a bit short of cash. Can usually pick up job lots for £10-20.

Looking through older posts about ansmann motors i am definately not getting 1.

On ebay i have seen 23 turn Hackmoto motors wich if i am correct are Yokoma motors? These are cheap enough.

I have also seen 20 turn Hpi saturn motors for about £13 delivered.

Is 20 turn probably to fast? Also has anyone tryed either of these motors, are they ok?

Yeah the trouble with the TL01 is that you don't have that many options where gearing is concerned (except running an 19, 20 or 21 tooth pinion). If you put a motor with fewer turns than 23 in, it'll actually run slower than a silver can, and probably overheat simply because the gearing in the car is too high.

With mine (running a 19 tooth), I've tried running a silver can, the BZ (23 turn), a 19 turn, 19 double and an Ansmann Clash 15t. Of all of them the BZ gives the best performance by a really large margin.

TL01b exaggerates the gearing shortage more than the TL01 because of the larger buggy sized wheels.

I've tried a Peak Racing 19 turn double in the Baja Champ and that was too much. It got too hot and melted the chassis where the motor bolts on. The BZ 23 turn I think would be a far better match in a TL01b (Not the RZ 23 turn). I currently have a Tamiya 27T Dirt Tuned in mine with a 19T steel pinion. Plenty fast enough for it's poor handling.

I'm a big fan of Ansmann Clash motors myself ;)

Re the HPI Saturn ... I haven't tried the 20T, but Im was pretty impressed with the 35T - it's obviously slower than a silvercan though.

A Mardave 25T G2 motor or a Hunter Systems 540SF (27T) is an improvement over a silvercan ... I'm not sure it's ten quids worth of improvement though - not compared to £20 or so for a Sport Tuned.

Question though - is the BZ really twice as good at motor as the Sport Tuned? I've been hearing good things about it, but £40 posted is too rich for me.

I will try and get hold of a decent 2nd hand Tamiya Bz motor off ebay( i am watching 1 at the moment but have a feeling it will go out of my price range)

If i cant get a 2nd hand BZ within a few weeks i might take a gamble on a 23 turn Hackmoto (Yokoma i think).
