Who out there buys more than one of what is essentially the same platform?

<snip>

Just wondering who out there "needs" the entire collection to be happy.

This question is more likely to be asked now I think, in this era where Tamiya refers to almost every car in terms of Chassis number. ;)

Yes I know Tamiya always used the same chassis on multiple models, even back in the 80s. But it wasn't always so clinically defined like "TL-01" etc. I prefer the days when the car name was always written on the chassis, and the emphasis (for marketing purposes) was more about the overall car itself. Of course this wasn't as easy to categorize in a database, or for newbies to understand which car was related to which. But it had a charm about it.

Because back then, a Frog was marketed and sold as a Frog. They didn't write the chassis name everywhere. And even today, this creates an amusing conundrum after the re-releases. Because those old chassis still have no boring ID like the new ones, so the 2010 Perfect Guide book has pages that list all the chassis and in amongst all these boring letters and numbers, the old chassis have to just be written as "Frog type", "Hotshot type", "Buggy Champ type" and so on ;)

I only think in terms of Frog, Hornet, Hotshot, etc etc etc. I like the cars mainly for their appearance. It has zero to do with the chassis for me. So if Tamiya made 100 cars based on the Frog chassis, but each one was still an awesome and unique and different looking car (overall), then I would buy them all.

cheers,

H.

To each their own. For me, there's fun is building the car itself. If the only difference is in details like the shocks, body mounts, and body, I would want something else. For me it would be building the same thing over and over again.

Reading the posts, I have to admit to something I didn't realize. If the cars have different purposes, I will have more than one. As I already mentioned, I have more than one DB01 because I run them in different classes. I also currently have 5 Associated TC4s. One is my VTA car, another my basher that is always way too fast for me to run around the track and be in control (but it is fast and fun in it's own right), and the others are pretty much identical cars running silver can motors that exist so my friends kids have something to run around and have fun with.

If you run them you have to have at least a second one for the kids and it is always a good source of parts so that is the third one and if you have more than one kid you can simply justify having one for each of them (well that is what I tell her indoors - ha ha).

We have (me and my kids)

multiple Monster Beetles, Original Blackfoots, Super Blakfoots, King Blackfoots

3 stadium thunders (to be converted to Beetle bodied at some stage as haven't managed to ever purchase a blitzer beetle)

2 Clods

2 Bullheads

3 Falcons

multiple TA02's and FF01's (like Shodog to hang bodies off eventually)

multiple TGX's

3 lunchboxes

multiple M02's

2 fighter buggies

3 SRB chassis's all due to get rere scorcher bodies (plus one original of course)

Multiple means more than 2 (I couldn't be bothered looking in all the places we have them - pays to spread them out otherwise too many questions are asked)

They follow me home. I'm serious. I don't know why, but the next thing I know an extra DT-02 or DF-01 has snuck into my hobby room and made friends with all the other adopted cars. It would be cruel to chuck them out after they have become friends, so I allow them to stay. Reluctantly of course, but hey, what's a guy to do?

I have slimmed down my rather large collection of Minis recently - I decided I only needed one M03 and one M05 but I do have three M01s as I was until recently racing one and I have my original car from about 15 years ago.

I have had multiples of other chassis in the past but recently decided this was a bit pointless... Just don't have the room!
