I've recently become obsessed with the Skoda fabia Wrc. Watching videos of the test car's nimbleness and power is inspiring.

So anyway, I've already got 2 bodyshells (210mm wheelbase) and I've tossed the first one on my M03. It looks fairly nice and with bearings and a sport tuned, handles very much like the rally car appears to. However, for the second shell, I'm having the red bull livery custom made and wanted to see if I could find an AWD chassis worthy of it. It's occurred to me that for a mor scale appearance, I'll need touring car wheels and so I wanted to go in the direction of a converted TT01. I would go for a Cup racer (adjustable width and lay down front shock mounting are a plus) but I'm not sure about the compatibility of available wheels with the hubs. I'd greatly appreciate any other sugestions, (or advice on how to make a converted TT01 actually 210mm) as I'm largely still in the planning phases.

Also if anyone's got a spare TT01 gathering dust that they're willing to part with, that would help too :D

CupRacer wheels are a unique "MX60" size larger than Mini but smaller than touring... available tyres are all HPI only.

They are std 12mm hex fit same as any usual touring wheel.

Not too easy to mod a stock TT01 beyond its factory std & short wheelbase

to get it anywhere near 210mm easiest would be 3Racing's TT01mini conversion kit

but pricewise all-up its not cheap... probably just as easy to get a ABC Genetic or Active A210SS

I may end up going with the cup racer then if I can just pop regular Touring wheels on it with no mod. I was really only considering the TT01 with the m-chassis conversion anyway and largely wanted to stay with Shaft driven awd. The cup racer seems to offer the most versatile option since I'm going to need to be able to "slam" the body and upright shock mounts present a problem with mounting the front-end low enough. I'm just a bit wary since despite manufacturer's claims, the 210 wb seems to be the one wb they don't seem to be able to quite make without some modding.

Actually, can anyone tell me the pros/cons of shaft vs belt driven AWD? I'm thinking belt is sprone to more slippage, am I wrong?

belts in RC applications usually wrap over half or more of the circumference, they ain't gunna slip in any hurry unless the pulleys are really worn

on the TA05 they've even deleted half the teeth (every 2nd tooth) on the "36t" (18!) diff pulley and that runs fine

Trying to figure out what wheel size I'm going to use. The cup racer wheels when held up side by side with the Tamiya M chassis swift wheels seem to be no larger. What measurements I could find cites a difference of 1mm. Does anyone know if the ABC Genetic wheels are any larger? ;)

ABC Generic (M-chassis) wheels are the same size as Tamiya's M-chassis wheels ;)

the only "midsize" is HPI's MX60 recently introduced by CupRacer & Switch

this is a tamiya mini wheel sitting inside a MX60-sized T-drift tyre:-

Hmm, that looks like it's the ticket. I guess the Datsun (Fairlady) cup racer doesn't come with those since the ones I have are the same size as the Tamiya Swift 1600 wheels

i thought all the CupRacers came with MX60 wheels; doesn't the Zed get the 4-spoke design?

http://www.hpiracing.com/kitoptions/100594/

all MX60 items will show MX60 on the bag tag title

the tyres are like HPI's "vintage" design where outer sidewall has a lip that overlaps the wheel to make it look smaller

I may just be looking wrong as I haven't had a chance to start the build and they're still in the bags. Speaking of which, the bag only seems to reference the type of kit they're included in which I thought odd. It's definitely not an illusion (because of the vintage sidewalls) since I'm holding the rims up (sans tire) for comparison.

wierd, you got a larger set of swift wheels or something? :)

DSC_2079s.jpg

here's some yellow swift wheels shod with HPI X-patts

same above MX60 T-drifts have been mounted on Fiat500's MX60 chrome wheels; you can see the sidewayy difference

difference in size when mounted doesn't look as marked compared to the wheel-in-tyre shot huh?

That may be what I'm seeing..the fact that measurement-wise, they sound much bigger but don't seem it at all in actual comparison. (that wheel in tire shot is crazy though) I've forced myself not to buy any wheels until I'm 100% sure since that tends to lead to tons of money impulsively spent on wheels I don't end up using.

MX60 suits MX60 only i guess, limits down the choice.

No "rallyblock" MX60 tyres from HPI yet although ppl are stretching RC18 tyres onto mini wheels.

I did buy the CupRacer T-Drifts as they weren't listed as MX60, thinking i could use those M01 wheels.

And only this week i realised that Mini tyres have a slanted bead cross-section, the wheel is coneshaped where you glue it. :)

Ha, that sounds like my plan to stretch the mini tires unto the MX60's might be scuttled. Either way though, regular touring wheels are far too large so the MX60's seem to be the best I'll be able to get. I'm also on the lookout for cheapo toy Rc's with detailed bodies I can steal to make some sort of 1/12 hybrid, but alas, the time of toy R/C's that actually look like real cars seems to have passed me by (20 years ago!)

It seems the Cup racer wheels I have are in fact MX60, it's just near impossible to eyeball the difference. For added confusion, with the kit slicks on them, they're actually the same size, but if I take the tamiya tires and put them on the cup racer wheels, I have to do a lot of stretching, and the resulting combination is visibly larger than the mini wheel...

Posted

btw there's also 2 size of Tamiya mini tyres... normal which is ~56-58mm dia or the 60D which is slightly bigger with thicker sidewall; both fit on same mini wheel

*cries*

It's ok though, apparently all I have to do is find some white 10 spoke MX60s

the only 10-spokers are the Fiat500 ones above :) ... i think they come in grey, black & dark chrome... not sure about white.

They do have a bit of 'dish' to them even though the above ones are 0mm offset.

Swift wheels are more flat faced... but they're 11-spoke?

i got the touring size proline 10-spoke in chrome too, that you were asking about on the guy's m03 rally

Actually, i think I'm good. I'll just get the 8 spokers since they seem to come in white and are close enough in a pinch. The touring car wheels are way too big so I'm abandoning that idea altogether (despite the fact that I've already impulsively bought a set that hasn't even been delivered yet)

The project is progressing nicely. The cup racer donor chassis in nearly built, I'm waiting for the micron tape, wheels and brake disks to be delivered and I've got the decals and paint already in hand. Stay tuned for updates!

Didn't see this thread somehow but now that I have I'll try to give some of my input on the CR wheels tires.

Stretching Mini tires onto the CR wheels won't work, I'll try to take some pictures to explain what I mean. As for the CR wheels, they also come in 8 spoke pattern. Anyway here is a comparison of the wheel size.

DSCF1199.jpg

With tires mounted. The two black ones are Mini wheels with 60mm and 55mm tires.

DSCF1203.jpg

IMO you should try using the new Mini Rally blocks and wheels that's used on the new M-05Ra.

I THINK these are Mini wheels, may want to contact Tamiya to make sure. It looks to have the right number of spokes. These are clear but you could paint them.

I've actually done the stretching and it does work after a fashion. The edges of the tire are higher than the center after the stretching, but I figure I can force that with copious foam stuffing. B)
