Just wondering, with all the fun we all derive from indulging in our R/C passion, did it ever distracted you from your studies?

Did it affect your grades? Did it improve your passion for studying or career?

I know my Boomerang and Avante dragged me down during my teens.

Fortunately, I managed to pull myself out of my R/C obsession and finished school.

Now I am back at it again

My missus disallows me to share my hobby with my 2 sons in case they get distracted from their books :)

I'm experiencing the distraction trouble at this very moment!!! :) I am in my final year of high school and the final exams are coming up in about 4-5 weeks - I have to focus my head on that at it's latest in two weeks  But gosh is it tempting to get my Dyna Storm out there, or work on one of my RC projects!

Exact same thing, except that I have already finished the last year of high school, although now I've still got to do the MATSEC exams....On the other hand I'm tempted to take out my FF01 and drive it around in my street or else start on an RC project or else just buy a new kit or else God knows what...I haven't touched my RC since late December :)

I was encouraged by my parents after my dad saw my mates Hornet running. I have fond memories of building my cars (which I received on my Bday in mid November and building the cars little by little every night). When the car was finished it was put way for a week or so until xmas when i recieved the batteries etc. The anticipation was fantstic, When I received my Falcon I was in heaven,my mate got a Super Sabre, another a MB.

The experience i shared with my dad was fantastic, we still laugh about accidently letting go of one of the cva dampers and the piston spraying the oil onto the ceiling, the mark is still there some 20 yrs later!! I learnt about motors, diffs, soldering and mending things myself. I cant remember if affecting my studies, if it were not for RC it would have been another hobby ie cycling, rugby etc. RC s as good as any non sporting activity, at least it is educational and u go outside to enjoy it!!! I enjoy my PS3 now, but I would be more likely to moderte console use than RC with kids.

Count me in as one of those whose grades & ability were improved. Infact, although I was madly interested in cars, trucks, buses etc from about the age of 4 and had Lego & Meccano sets from that age on, it was building my Hotshot, Bigwig & Optima Mid that began my education in mechanical, electrical & motor vehicle engineering. A lot of what I learned were the 1st steps to becoming a vehicle technician and then onto Uni to do a Mech Eng degree.

Really, my interest in Tamiya has shaped my whole career if I trace the steps back.

I can't say R/C was distracting me from studies, particularly. I had lots of distractions from studies, be they music, girls, a job, and driving real cars. Not to mention at about the 8th grade I decided I was fairly smart enough already and wasn't much for studying anyhow. Don't get me wrong, I finished high school just fine. :)

What I will say is that I think R/C taught me a lot about mechanics, problem-solving, physics, and general engineering. This is very useful stuff. I don't work on 1:1 cars, but I do understand them. I ride Mtn. bikes and I understand the suspension components and adjustments very well due to R/C. There are many aspects to R/C that can be considered healthy to a person. The fact you are learning, the fact you are outside, among others. If a child is being distracted too much by R/C and studies are suffering, well there are measures that can be taken to quell that. But to be honest, there are MANY distractions a child has these days that can affect studies. How about the internet?? Game consoles? Smartphones? I'm not a parent yet but I will be eventually and I think caution needs to be taken with ANY distractions a child can face in today's world. Choices must be weighed, and children's time and activity must be monitored. I can tell you my kids won't be sitting on their ***** all day inside staring at an electronic box (or panel) getting fat, and stupid. Just like my mom did I will do the same... kick 'em outside and tell them to go do something!

25 years in for me. Through school, it helped out a lot. Got me interested in physics and math. My parents used it as a reward system for good grades. I don't know where I would be without RC in my life.

RC distracts me from most things in life. As I type the other half is on the other side of the room saying something, blah, blah, blah I'm too distracted by Tamiyaclub to hear.

20 years for me. Still studying though. still distracting (well this forum/ community is). Well, could be down the pub given my liver and kidneys a workout instead.

Now that's funny...'because it's so true... especially the blah, blah, blah part.
