What Turns U Off About The Forums

Recommended Posts

Technically, based on the definition of both terms, calling the second picture "wheels" is just as wrong as calling them "rims" since they consist of both. The rim is the outer part where the tire sits, while the "wheel" is the part the lugnuts bolt into.

I call them rims, wheels or shoes (slang)

According to Oxford english dictionary the correct meaning of wheel;-

a circular object that revolves on an axle, fixed below a vehicle to enable it to move along or forming part of a machine. 2 something resembling a wheel or having a wheel as its essential part

So I guess you run your car on wheels not rims ;-)

That is the proper way for wheels. But I call them what I want.

In the Illustrated Oxford dictionary look up tire (2), shows a picture of a tire. Considering the British use the word tyre which does not appear, I am guessing my Oxford dictionary is catered to the Americas..

Yeah, we all need to be a bit tolerant of colloquialisms and regional variations - tire/tyre tomato/tomato B)

Hobby and gaming groups have the tendency to get thoroughly up themselves about the minutiae of specific terminology.

My general yardstick is to ask someone outside the hobby. Generally, if they shrug or offer some variation of "I dunno" or "who cares?" it notifies me that I'm the crazy person in the scenario.

I've seen pages and pages of flames arguing the proper terminology to use when describing player controlled avatars in MMO's.

colloquialisms lol, someone got to the C section in the dictionary ;-)

I think its just making things a little easier for people to spell

Like the old Aluminium and Aluminum I suppose, even the Japanese use all the american spellings of English words on their packaging :)

While were (me?) talking about Tamiya Packaging, they always put the Japanese language and parts facing out but for everywhere else in the world (that I would of imagined) use the English side of the packaging thereby showing the back of all the parts, perhaps they just dont want to cater to the masses. B)

Cheers

The thing i hate the most is the - "How much is it worth........" question. I mean, come on!. Why does everyone think that just because they have found a dusty old Tamiya, it has to be worth something?. The other thing that drives me nuts is all the handbaging - a classic example is the thread on the re-release of the scorcher. Oh my god............people were so stroppy they were saying they were never going to buy another Tamiya again!!!!!!. Then there were the people who moaned that the number plates being stickers..............jeeez, some of us here are old enough to know better.

James.

Someone needs to help me out with this one, because at first glance, my response would be "Because sometimes it is?"

Why exactly is it so ridiculous to think your dusty Tamiya might be worth something? I mean if there was no precedent for that, this very forum might not exist.

I got you before. I was just making an (apparently poor) joke about what it might be like to be "Listerine"

Listerine is mouthwash. In this context, Loaded is trying to say we shouldn't be so strict on the language.

Sorry, I wasn't being intentionally 'aloof' I was just sleeping (**** Australians wide awake whilst I am tucked up!)

I was kind of poking fun at myself with my comment about talking in code. For a long time I lived in East London, home of Cockney rhyming slang. Listerine means anti American, it was a term introduced after the Iraq war.

I will explain (note : I am not being clever, just poking fun at myself...)

Rhyming slang takes a pair of words with the second rhyming with a single noun, example:

Apples and pears = Stairs. Although real Cockneys never use the second rhyming word, they would just say apples.

Another example :

Trouble and strife = wife. You would just say trouble.

Cockney rhyming slang was started to confuse the police (Cockneys for the most part are involved in something dodgy, even if it is just minicabbing!)

The origins of the rhymes and which ones are original etc are the stuff of the kind of legend that would involve even more bile and arguing that even Tamiyaclub.com members are able to muster. Without going into too much (boring detail) Listerine is abstract Cockney rhyming slang, thus:

Septic Tank = Yank (Sorry guys) which means that a Cockney would say 'Septic', as in, my mate is living with a Septic (American girl). Listerine is an 'Anti-Septic', hence my comment about us being a little less Listerine. We should be less Anti American.

As I said, I was poking fun at myself with my previous comment about talking in code. But I have seen a few Anti American (Listerine) posts before...

I should probably clarify that my post isn't anti american. I don't have a problem with the differences that there are between the two variations of English (colour / color and favourite / favorite) for example. In fact on American RC websites you'll find that the section you look in to buy the round things you stick on your car that you attach your tyres (or tires!) to is called "Wheels", so it's not a trans-Atlantic language issue.

Perhaps it's a global colloquialism, that has infiltrated our language from the tuner scene, however when I see the word used in a context other than "the outer edge of a circular object" I immediately associate it's use with the kind of wannabe idiot that even though he's a white middle class youth that lives in the Home Counties with his mum still insists that he's from "da 'hood".

I apologise if my post caused any offence to anyone in particular, and I realise that I probably could have worded it better.

:P Wouldn't 'Savlon' be a bit easier to slip into a sentence and more recognisable as an anti-septic and not a mouthwash?

Or Dettol
