I figured I'd post the pics for this here, since it's no longer a Tamiya project

The original thread is here if anyone's interested.

I got bitten by the skoda bug a while back searching for unique bodies for my recently purchased M03M chassis. Stumbled across the 210mm Skoda Fabia WRC bodyshell and a did a bit of research on the car itself.

Wow.

It gets awesome at around 2:44

So anyway, here's the beginning of my project to recreate the Skoda fabia WRC using a Cup racer chassis (for the awd and the adjustable track)

Decals thanks to WillyChang B)

Stay tuned! More to come!

Looks good, can't wait to see more!

Ask and you shall recieve:

After inhaling entirely too much Tamiya paint, and temporarily killing the blowdryer:

Cup Racer chassis with Tamiya XB electronics comandeered from a RTR Mo3M Suzuki Swift (sport tuned was a hop-up)

Brake rotors fitted and Tamiya Mini tires stretched over MX60 wheels

And here's the finished car.

I miscalculated the sizing of the silver skoda lettering over the rear fender (too big) so I left it off at least temporarily.

Wow that looks great wish I had something with a short wheelbase like that to play around with. On a similar note I'm gonna get the 240Z Cup Racer body to fit onto my M04M chassis.

Wow very cool. How do you like the cup racer chassis? Do you think the parts are good quality (i.e. dampers, wheels, tires, chassis deck etc.?) I've been wanting to get one of these ever since I saw that they did a BMW 2002 body for it.

Wow that looks tasty. Nice work!

I have been watching these sort of cars i.e. Skoda Fabia, Peugeot 207, Ford Fiesta Turbo S2000, on the Intercontinental Rally Challenge ( IRC ). It's on Eurosport's website as video, and on EuroSport 2 (TV channel).

I like them better than the cars on the WRC as they are 2WD I think, and more like the car that I drive ( Fiesta MK6 ).

Cheers,

Alistair G.

I just took it out for a run. (had to narrow the track on the front wheels so they wouldn`t foul on the body when turning) and it`s honestly the most fun I`ve ever had with my pants on. When I was looking into getting the cup racer chassis, I read a review on the net that stated they were about as fast as the Tamiya M chassis cars out of the box. I`d like to declare that a lie. I had exactly the same electronics in a ballraced M03M and while it was fun to drive it was nowhere near as ridiculous as the cup racer. I`ve got to be carful with the throttle or else it does spontaneous doughnuts. The M03 never did that (maybe it`s the AWD)

The dampers are smaller diameter than the Tamiya M-chassis ones I`ve got on my Swift, but they actually offer dampening rather than just being bouncy. The chassis deck is fiberglass, and probably not as sturdy as the relatively bulletproof M. Wheels are comparable in quality, but a bit larger in diameter (which is another reason I chose the cup racer) The Fairlaidy kit I got comes with slick tires, but I didn`t use them so I can`t really comment on tire quality.

I think the production Fabia is 2wd (fwd probably) but the WRC version apparently was converted to AWD

WRC and S2000 are all 4WD. S2000 are n/a. :D

Ahh I didn't know that. Yes, Junior World Rally Championship ( JWRC ) is the only one that is Front wheel drive only and no turbo allowed.

Thanks for that. Cool, I'll go and find some JWRC to watch.

Cheers,

BTW... JWRC are 1600 ccm cars... ;) (but silly fun to hear and watch)

This car's renewed my hatred for all diffs geared. Just had the front gearbox sieze 3 minutes into my run. Now I have the unenviable task of tearing into the front gearbox to tighten what will probably be a single screw. I should really know better though since I had the same problem with my TLT...

Did you use Tamiya Ceramic Grease (the white, not clear, one) on the teeth of the differential ? Did you use the 2 MA9 thrust washers (one each side) in the diff' AND put Ceramic Grease on them on the inner side where they wear against the 2 diff' side gears ? Did you use Ceramic grease on the Counter shaft and Spur gear shaft ? Is the gearbox fully ballraced ?

Actually, it turns out the problem wasn't what i thought it was (diff screw backing out and locking against the inside of the gearbox) it's actually the fact that the pinion/spur encolsure isn't nearly as sealed as it needs to be and tiny bits of grit get in and chew up the gears. It's fixed for the time being, but I'm pretty sure I need to either get a steel pinion or find some way to better seal it.

Quick question where did you get the disc rotors from? I like that.... the car look sweet as.... I was thinking of he Red Bull style for my mini rally project but not sure if the RB decals would be too big for the Mini shell

The rotors are HPI hopups for the Cup racer and the Switch. If you don't have either chassis there are ones that work on the standard hexes that Tamiya uses. I think I got them on e-bay (so not really any help there) On the topic of the decals, I got those custom made by WillyChang right here on TC.

it looks great, i'm really impressed :D the decals are great, i'm going to get a custom set made up when i can finalise a design.

why do you paint the shell before cutting? the only reason i can think of is so it prevents as much paint as possible sticking to the outside of the shell.

TBH I've done both (painting before cutting and painting after) and there really isn't an advantage to either (for me) I don't really have a preference.

ah right fair enough, wasn't sure if it had advantages or not.

just had a look at the pictures again, it really is a great looking project
