Dug my WO out now I have all the parts I needed to get the rebuild underway and in the manual I found this additional page had been added in by hand. Looks like it came with the kit when purchased from the model shop (I still have the receipts, £140 for the "Wild One package"). Outlines the need to add in a brass tube spacer in the rear shocks on the piston rod.

Haven't opened up the rear shocks yet but just wondered if anyone else had come across something similar with their WO's?

Hi Lee ,good luck with the rebuild mate . I'm pretty sure this mod is a 'quick fix ' to stop the rear arms dropping too far when airbourne etc and crunching up the shafts etc .I have a mod. sheet like this for the Fox too.On later W/O's the arms were modified in the castings to make the arm stop oval instead of round to keep the arms up .I have both types of rear arms here

Interesting. I never knew there were two different rear arms and i've owned a few WW's! The knowledge in the club never ceases to amaze me!

o rly?

got a pic pls?

have only seen the round pegs afaik, will have to keep eyes peeled

Glad to help .I first encountered this problem with excessive arm travel years ago when I had my first FAV .I used a small plastic spacer inside the damper to cure it .In the pic with the arm mounted to the buggy you can just make out the original round mould line where the original moulding was altered to create the oval shape ,the next pic is the original round stop type. BTW the FAV original front arms are narrower than the Wild One front arms

Sounds interesting. Hit first prob last night, the grub screw in the left upright is knacked and thus I can't get it out to take the whole arm apart and clean it all down. Will just have to clean it in one piece and chuck it back on but the grease and dust has been caked on for a number of years and it's a bloomin nightmare :)

Will put some pics up tomorrow of build so far. Other thing I did find is the front shocks are a bit soft even after stripping and refilling with oil, can anyone recommend some stiffer springs?

Thanks for the pictures, Kev! I did not know anything about the changes you have explained.

By the way, anybody knows anything about the hydraulic shocks I have on my FAV project? Have a look:

hmm interesting info. I see that reinforcement part on the arm in the second pic which I have never seen before. Where did that come from?

Hi Carrera , the first pic shows an oval shaped stop sitting in the shaped metal guide, this has been reshaped in the moulding process by Tamiya as a modification to the Wild One as the original arm ( shown on the right pic) was allowing the rear arms to drop too low if the buggy was off the ground and the drive shafts would bind & 'click' in the cups etc causing excessive wear , the oval shape has added more plastic to the bottom of the stop to keep the arm up higher at full stretch without packing the damper internally. Hi Lucasan ,these arms are later editions released by Tamiya and are on the E parts that are for sale these days ,but I have an original E parts tree with the original round type arm stops

My WO has the mod, just taken the shocks to bits this evening and aside from a flood of foul smelling oil (figures) the piston rods had a couple of the 4mm brass tubes on. Will be going back on as well.

Did promise to post some pics so here goes...ignore the wall colour, my workbench is in the undecorated attic room out of the way :P

On my workbench, WO stripped and ready for rebuild. New wheels front and back, new tyres front and back, new gearbox and rear arm tree, RCScrewz stainless steel hex screw kit (luxurious christmas present from the old man as were the wheels and front tyres), Radshape RC bumper, Twinset front suspension mounts and a TeamBlueGroove repro body (these are really nice by the way, and ***** are great sellers).

P6040737.jpg

Off we go, TC on the laptop, bag of cheese kettle chips, Go Deep radio show on the ITouch and a pint of Hook Norton Haymaker just out of shot ;).

P6040766.jpg

Twinset's jolly nice front suspension mounts all shiny and polished.

P6040768.jpg

Old gearbox...new gearbox. All tickety boo so just gave it some fresh grease.

P6060769.jpg

Bingo, gearbox in. Front shocks mounted (need stiffer springs in my opinion), front arms on.

P6060770.jpg

Mounted one of the rear arms this eve before I realised I've run out of bearings! Schoolboy error ;) have ordered some new ones, hopefully be here by the weekend. Really enjoying this build, it's not very fussy and looks good from the outset. Will post some more over next week or so.

the blue shock is a Parma Shock upgrade set,,, they made them for the frog, hornet, grasshopper, wild one, FAV.

Thanks, Dan. I did not know what brand they were. Anyway, they are great. The thing I never liked about the Fast Attack Vehicle was the front suspension system. Now these shocks make all the diff in the world (in looks and performance).

Have a good one, Dan!

Yes, but where does the metal reinforcement on the arm come from?

Yes, but where does the metal reinforcement on the arm come from?

there is no reinforcement plate on the arm , the plate you are looking at in the pic is the std arm retainer plate which has the shapes in it to restrict the arm travel up & down as normal , the mod is on the arm itself giving it more plastic in the oval shaped stop to keep the arm up

Hi Kev,

The right hand pic showing the original WO arm with the round lug looks as if there's some shiny metal insert next to the lug extending to the left of the picture. I think that's what lucasan's referring to. A trick of the light I assume.

So Father's Day free time yielded...

Rear shocks drained, cleaned, polished, filled with fresh oil, rebuilt and remounted.

P6200775.jpg

Tyres painted with a lettering paint pen.

P6200777.jpg

Sprayed the ***** repro shell inside with PS5 as well, but who wants a pic of that :)

OK bit more done since last update:

Shell cut, sprayed and stickered up the TeamBlueGroove shell with some repro decals courtesy of Willy Chang @ Panda GFX. Nice chap even sent me a set free (Willy - cheers :) ) which is a good job cos I messed up the one that runs up the bonnet (the hood for our US members) and down the side first time round. Shell needs attaching and have some new body clips from TC member Alfettalimo on the way.

P7090804.jpg

Took the stock can out of my recently received Pajero and fitted that into the W1 which works welll as it's got the "Caution - hot" sticker on it so it matches the resistor cover.

P7090805.jpg

So, I have the original driver left to fit once I've painted him up along with all the electrics...need some new wire on the msc and a new receiver battery case and switch (anyone?) and we should be good to go. Gonna take the servos to bits to make sure they're and grease them up before fitting them back in. Still got the original red crystals as well.

Can you do us a favour and scan the instruction sheet please?

I could really use a copy of the whole thing after I just bought some rear dampers for the WO. I'd really appreciate a scan.

Or if you have no scanner, camera set to shutter speed higher than 1/100 sec. (sometimes enabling the flash does that). Scanner is always best though.

Just looked on Ebay and a seller there says that the rear damper shaft in the Damper Parts Bag is 42mm long, and to make sure that you have the right one before ordering. So my question is please, is there any variation in Wild One rear damper shaft length or are they all identical?

Cheers,

Alistair G.
