2.4ghz Receiver Aerials? Do They Work Fine Inside The Body?

Recommended Posts

Quick question, with the 2.4Ghz aerials being smaller, do they work just as good inside the body or do they need to be outside as per usual?

just curious as i prefer the cleaner look of them inside, but it does cause range issues!

YES.. They work fine..

I have the aerials inside the body on all my cars (on and off road) that are fitted with Spektrum radios and have had no issues..

My 27mhz ones appear to be fine inside the body too.

I suspect i have some duff receivers or possibly a crystal.

On the traxxas with its own receiver it is fine over distance, it has a sticky up aerial.

on the bush devil i have tried 2, one has a shortened aerial (damaged) and the other is a vintage acoms with a HUGE aerial wrapped around the interior (the front/rear mounts) and has real issues with any distance!

Wrapping the aerial isn't good...try making it as straight as possible and try it again...

My Spektrum works fine with the antenna underneath the receiver, in between the velcro that holds the receiver down

If someone wants to hazard a guess as to the distance from the driver's stand is at Snetterton to the furthest corner of the track, it might help with range estimates, as I never had any problems over that distance. WW2, Lunchbox and TB-02 all ran fine (1 hard shell, 2 lexan)

+1, wrapping the thing will kill the range as will cutting the thing since the optimal length is determined by the frequency.

I'm running Futaba R603FF receivers. The antenna does not need to be outside the body to work, but you do want to try to keep it away from the other wires as much as possible.

At the ranges a toy car is run you shouldn't have any issues. At max range the thing will be too small to drive (and don't forget about the long walk you need to take if the thing flips over.) Even for the big 1/8 platforms I don't know of many tracks where the thing will be more than 150 feet away.

I've had the antenna get ripped out of the receiver and never noticed until after the race.

Works perfectly in the experience I have with it. Even running the aerial next to the motor (on my Traxxas 1/16 E-Revo) didn't seem to give any interference or glitches at all. On my TB-01 it's beneith two bodies, the dust cover and the car body... Also works flawlessly :)

My Tower Hobbies/Tactic 2.4 doesn't have an external antenna... so I'd say the technology doesn't require outside the body for ones that do use a short external.

Though, don't use more than one layer of lead paint!

Guesstimating that distance using a 15' car as a basis, I reckon 130' to 135' (c. 40 metres). It's not just about range at Snetterton though - the futhest corner (top of picture) must have some sort of interference issue - 27mhz gear suffers really badly there.
