Whats the best grease to use inside my rough rider gear box and what the best way to seal the gear case itself. Tamiya has several types of grease anti wear, silicon borion, modeleum.. so confusing.

Ceramic grease is the best choice:

Sealant for gearbox halves (the stuff that DOESN'T smell like vinegar as it dries):

Applicator to make a fine bead (prevents a nasty ugly mess). Fill it with sealant, stick the plunger in.

Just cut the tip to the bead size you want.

I put a single thin bead of sealant on one of the gearbox halves making sure there are no gaps. Even and steady wins this task.

After double-checking all of the gears, shafts, grease, bearings one final time, I push the gearbox halves together with the sealant bead applied. And I try to never open it again. ;)

To re-grease internal gears later, you can remove the motor and get in there pretty easily to see the teeth and apply fresh grease, so unless something really goes wrong inside the gearbox you should never have to open it.

But if you do decide the gearbox needs to come apart, it takes some prying (not too much) and then a good cleaning to remove the old sealant and apply a fresh bead again when you put it back together.

If you do it right the only way stuff can get into the gearbox is through the spaces in the bearings and shafts. The motor and spur gear covers can be sealed, too. It may even be possible to use rubber-sealed bearings and seal them into place with sealant, too, but I think at some point it gets a little ridiculous and likely impossible to prevent water from getting into the gearbox if you submarine your SRB.

Tip: After you are done, if you let the sealant dry inside the applicator long enough (a couple of weeks is good), you can easily remove the hardened sealant as a single chunk and re-use the applicator again later.
