i want a cheap buggy to bash ideally a rising storm but cant really afford it atm so was thinking of a ansmann madrat or macnum but cant decide ;)

anyone got either of these if so what they like? :)

I have a mad rat.

Great buggy, and well designed (well, ripped off from a much more expensive buggy!)

They are not bullet proof, but for the price you can't go wrong. Get the bearings though, if you plan to build it yourself.

I also have a macnum. They are good too - just a "stadium truck" version of the rat.

For about £50 for the kit (for each) I have no complaints, only compliments for both these cars!

yeah will be the kit to give me somehting to build ;)

they had a madrat on display in my local model shop and i loved the look of it so probly go with that ;)

i just fancy a buggy as all my cars are bodied cars plus the pumpkin , i want a buggy to blast on the beach ect

cheers

Mine is still in bits. Never could get the gearbox set up right and the motor plate holes were simply drilled too large for the bolts to fit properly.

Perhaps I was unlucky with mine and got a "Friday" one.

I wouldn't be happy to recommend them at all. They're that cheap for a reason.

i think they were the early ones with that problem. the bolts only just reached the metal motor plate, and the threads stripped instantly

mine were like that - i used longer bolts with nuts and a bit of modding

the later ones were sorted, iirc

Yeah I'll probably get around to fixing it up at some point with a mod like the one you mention. Trouble is, it did tick me off a little that I should even HAVE to do that.. dents my enthusiasm to tinker if I'm completely honest.

i know what you mean

it was a real "aha THIS is why it's so cheap" moment.

still, I believe the later ones were sorted (with nuts/bolts mod)

thing is, if you buy a kit, you could be buying one from the earlier stock . . . . . .

I've built 2 Mad Rat kits, and to be honest I was pleasantly surprised by the quality/design for the price. Yes, the motor plate was ridiculous at only about 1.5mm thick and tapped to take threaded bolts, but I was careful doing them up and used threadlock - no problems so far with a TZ motor.

One kit did have a faulty part - a suspension shaft didn't have a machined groove in one end for the circlip, but I posted it to Ansmann and got a replacement by return of post - can't ask for better after sales service! Although I agree it shouldn't have got through QC... Saw some very slight differences between the 2 kits too, so I think there's definitely some different batches of kits out there.

For the price I don't think you can go wrong though, especially if the Fusion Hobbies 10% discount is applicable and takes the kit down to about £40!

Check out my showroom, as I sold the Mad Rat body and mounted a Kamtec baja beetle on it - easy to do with a couple of extra body posts. It's a great basher!

the kit has the motor: "•Includes 540 type 23T motor"

whereas the RTR has: "•Ansmann Clash 540 type motor"

neither is a standard silver can. could both be the same motor? Ansmann motors are dirt cheap anyway if you want to upgrade.

the RTR makes good economic sense (having all the radio gear/battery/ESC etc) but building a kit is more fun, even for a few extra ££'s. also RTR radio sets (at that price) are often bobbins.

if you are gonna add bearings, it looks like you would have to strip the RTR a bit to get them in.

also note that "RTR" doesn't always mean ready to run - sometimes it means some chump loosely whacked it together in the factory

How 'bout a Mardave Cobra?

There's a few on E-Bay at the mo for £20ish.

Nice tidy re-built one under £40 on there.

They're well thrashable, bung on some better shocks and fit a hairy motor.

Should you break owt, spares are dead cheap and quickly delivered from Mardave.
