Hi everyone,

Whats happened to the re releases? I have not seen a 'new' model for ages (not including the Holiday Buggy). It seemed that Tamiya have released a great deal of their early kits I and I am thankful for that, but nothing of note has been released for ages? Surely there is a market for the Falcon, Fox, Wild One, Monster beetle, Avante, 959 etc etc.

(I just remembered that the Sand Scorcher was released quite recently, but I love the cars from 84 - 90)

Anyone know if Tamiya are planning any further re releases?

it's the hottest question on the forum!

what will be rere'd next!!

my view on your suggestions: Falcon, Fox, Wild One, Monster beetle, Avante, 959

Falcon - doubtful. We have the "neo falcon". Does have a similar body design to original. The originals are ten a penny on ebay anyway!

Fox - hmmmmmmm. You never know! Not many parts already in production though! Never say never

Wild One - often assumed to be "the next" rere. Can't see it myself - unless it some major reworking. Would love to see it in original form, but not likely.

Monster Beetle - most likely in this list. Almost all parts are still in production in some form or another.

Avante - sadly never. No way. Sad but true.

959 - Can't see that happening. Unless it was on an M0x chassis. Then it would be pointless.

I love the rere's too.

But I also love the new chassis' and new releases.

Would be nice if Tamiya could just "rere" ALL the old bodysets/wheels and decals. Wouldn't that be good?!

Interesting points, I bought a neo falcon last year and am very impressed with the design and durability of the more modern cars, its just that the old cars have 'something' (I have a mint original Falcon which currently is sitting on a shelf, I just cant bring my self to run it though!)

I hope they do bring out something relevant from kits 58050 to 58100 though. A fox, vanquish, and a 959 would do me nicely!

I do wonder whether Tamiya's re-releases may have run their course.

They have spent the best part of a decade dribbling out cars, some of them quite illogically, until the relatively recent re-release of the most iconic buggies in their history, the Buggy Champ (Rough Rider) and Sand Scorcher.

Looking at the UK shop shelves - they simply haven't sold. Nostalgia is one thing, but not at £250 for a chassis that doesn't handle.

Amongst the other iconic cars that I can think of...

- 3-speeds have been "re-imagined" as the Hi-lift family so won't get a re-release.

- Hotshot family has come out

- Frog/Brat family has come out (a Monster Beetle re-re is maybe the only contender I can think of for a proper re-release)

- Grasshopper/Lunch Box family has come out (barely went out of production though)

But as well as that, Tamiya have indulged us with...

- XR311

- Tyrell 6-wheeler

- Manta Ray family (again, barely out of production)

- Dyna Storm

- A number of old-body-modern-chassis combos

Which are either curiosities or something that was virtually a modern car, and also seem easy to find new even several years after the re-release. People don't want them!

About the only other iconic car left is the Avante. Can't see that happening at all. The cost would be extortionate.

This wasn't a true re-release, since the chassis was totally different. It was released on the 'F103RS' chassis with 4 front wheel setup.

As I said in another discussion, only one that makes sense is an ORV vehicle. Monster Beetle the biggest contender there. I would love to see a Blackfoot on a King Blackfoot chassis so I don't have to worry about the tranny exploding but I can only wish.

I think I read a post from Netsmith some times ago, saying that Mr Tamiya said the SS 2010 would be the ultimate & final re-re, but don't quote me on this...

Did Chris mentioned seeing Mr. Tamiya nose grew a bit when Mr. Tamiya mentioned the SS 2010 will be the final re-re? To be honest, I only bought 2 re-re and these were release from several years ago so the current re-re are nice but just haven't put the cash down. :P

Having just had a look through the list of the 1st 100 cars, other than those re-released already, the only ones I'd be interested in a re-re of would be a supershot (not going to happen) or a Vanquish (Unlikely, but more of a possiblity than an avante). As others have said, the 3 speeds have been re-imagined with the hi-lifts, so they won't get re-released, all the metal would make the kit mega bucks. A re-re toyota celica rally car would be nice, but they-re a bit fragile and don't have any parts common with any other re-releases.

I could actually see Mr Tamiya being right, saying the SS 2010 would be the last true re-release. Looking down the list, I can't see anything thats going to be more popular as a re-re than the Sand scorcher, buggy champ, and hotshot. As others have said, the monster beetle is a possibility, but if I wanted one, I'd just pick up a Sand scorcher re-re shell, a king blackfoot or blackfoot extreme chassis off ebay, some new twin det tyres, and hey presto, pretty close for a runner. Actually, if I was Mr T, I'd probably use a twin det chassis with a beetle shell, some repro decals, and some gold plated wheels, and call it the Monster Beetle 2. Much more capable and durable chassis than the original beetle, but with a much similar look. Perhaps that's not too far of the mark, given the HB 2010

I must admit though, it would perhaps be nice for tamiya to re-release some vintage spare parts, tyres, bodyshells, etc. £70 for a set super gripper pin spikes is ridiculous ;)

Personally, I'd rather see tamiya bring out something completely different. 1/10 road cars just show a plodding evolution to squeeze the next sliver of performance from the next car (bit like f1), and 1/10th buggy design hasn't really moved on all that much from the manta ray (principle layouts are the same, but still following an evolution). When the Clod Buster came out, it was totally different from anything that had gone before, primarily due to it's size.

Lets see some fresh thinking, rather than trying to squeeze more cash from a long dead corpse of a 20/30 year old design. I haven't bought a recent design since a DF-02, and that was over 4 years ago, and I ended up selling it after a year. I just don't find the newer models hold any interest, as they are not suffficiently different from models that have gone before. Re-res have been succesful partly because they have been so different from modern buggies I think.

So, how about a 1/16 model of a german E100 tank, 1/10 scale world war 2 willys jeep, but a proper scale look with 4wd, instead of wild willy. (Scalers would love this). Scale model tractors ????. What about a timberjack (As seen on tv on axemen. Articulated in the middle rather than having axle based steering.)

What about something practical :P ?, like a radio controlled lawn mower (That would be an easy one to get past SWMBO ), maybe gang mowers to tow behind a txt-1 :P

It's amusing to see how badly wrong people continue to get it when it comes to re-releases. Back in the day it was the old chestnut "They can't make it in metal because it would cost 1 million dollars to buy....blah blah" or "Nobody would buy such ancient technology nowadays...etc etc".

Now it would seem the latest classics are "My local hobby shop has one still on display therefore this means that nobody in the UK is buying any" and "My mate was down the pub with Mr Tamiya the other day and he told him this one is DEFINITELY the last".....

Face it people there is no evidence anywhere that the re-releases are going to dry up. Infact the latest one, the Avante, is if anything a deeper and much more significant plunge into re-re waters than any kit before it. I mean here they are fully prepared to bring back a hyper expensive piece of 1980s tech that was actually a dramatic flop. And not only that, they are bringing it back in all of it's vintage glory.

And yet people still reckon stuff like the 3 speeds are not possible? :D

It's funny looking through the threads of the other re-releases too as the conversation always seem to follow the same pattern, in the same stages...

Stage 1) Woohoo fantastic etc!!

Stage 2) Hang on a minute, I bet it's on a skateboard chassis or something rubbish like that.

Stage 3) Ooh actually it is a proper re-release. We love you Tamiya!!

Alternative Stage 3) See I told you!! It's not a proper re-release! We hate you Tamiya!

Stage 4) A 30 page "debate" about the future of Tamiya and the pros and cons of the re-release policy.

Stage 5) Everybody kisses and makes up and agrees that Tamiya is the best thing since sliced bread.

Stage 6) So what's the next re-release?

It's all good fun though and long may it continue. ;)

I think the Avante has shown that it could be any model. In the past they have been lots of theories about what will be re re'd due to sharing shells or chassis with other availble models etc etc. But this has blown that away..

Maybe that 959 is still a possibility as it comes up a lot on peoples wanted list, but its always dismissed as it would never happen.

good thing predicting the future isn't my day job :)

I don't think anyone could have seen it coming though. I'm still quite stunned by the news actually!

Never in my life had I thought that the the Avante would be a legit Re-re and the old "G" 1988 version at that. I would still be completely floored if Tamiya was doing a Re-re of the 2001. This has got to prove that there is no ryme or reason for what Re-re is produced. Well maybe Im wrong, was the Avante one of the Coffee Cans?

I'm still hoping for the Fox and Wildone! Figure if I write it enough on these boards maybe Tamiya see that there is demand for these two :-)

I with you on the Wild One. I will join in helping to create demand, you never now it may just work.

I still think they look at what's going for the most cash on Ebay ....... :D

Either that, or they look on here at predications and calculate which re-release will prove the maximum number of people wrong (Including me!):lol:
