Brushless advantages, longer run time, 100% maintainence free motor and esc no brushes to change or commutator to cut or maintain, gobbs of torq, with a good esc you have good programing options.

Disadvantge: a little expensive, not much selection (yet)

I just got an lrp esc with a neo1 brushless motor. Makes the power of about a 9 turn motor and I am impressed with the smoothe power, and longer runs. And at the end of a run you dont need to wait for a cool off time before running again.

anyone else care to add to this feel free.

I got the Novak SS5800 for Christmas and it was defective. It is now in

the post on its way back for warranty work, not sure when I'll see it

again.[:@] In searches and talking to tech services from Novak they

seem to be glitchy and fragile. Although I have not run mine yet[:'(]

Out of the box mine would only run if it was pushed and then it was

jittery, if it stopped rolling it needed a push again. The tech fella

said something is wrong with the sensor inside the motor.

Oh well, not sure if this helps but all brushed motors I ever bought

worked right out of the box. Plus if a brushless is broken you're

pretty much screwed and sending it back for repairs.[:$]

Does it do that going either direction? [:$] Sounds more like a dead FET on the ESC... there's 3 banks of FETs inside, if one's dead/disconnected the motor has 1/3rd chance of getting 'stuck' unmovable in that part of the rotation.

Have 3 SS5800s, they work great for me. Getting a bit old (3 yrs) now, maybe time for an upgrade... the one I was bashing with Tuesday after xmas repeatedly overheated. But it was a stinking hot day though (59degC on track surface, 38degC in shade).

Novak's repair/return policy has always been fantastic for me. [:S]

I have a novak HV-Maxx brushless in my txt-1 and I am absolutely satisfied with the performance.  I also just purchased a novak xrs esc - it didn't work so I sent it to novak.  I got a new one about a week and a half later - very quick !  Plus brushless is pretty easy - no motor sprays, brushes, springs , blah blah blah and longer runtimes !

Thanks for clearing that up guys. i saw on ebay brusless motor and esc deals for about £100 but they say they are for rc helicopters, will this matter?

Heli or aircraft have no reverse and also the motors have different windes, stick with carstuff. If you don`t there is a chance it might not work out and it might put you off.

What vehicle is this for ?  Here are some specifically for cars/trucks and not helis or planes. stick with these:

1/10 th scale:

LRP Sphere - Reedy Neo One

Novak Super Sport Plus & SS5800

Mini / micro:

Mamba series.

I can only vouch for the Novak HV Maxx though...............

I have the Tekin Rage ( 6800) in my RC-18T, it is simply superb !

I also have a GTB 5.5 Novak, but have yet to put it in anything, will be run this month though, so I can let you know then. But I have seen them run, and the best thing I find is that there is no more black art tuning going on, you just buy it and run it and will go the same speed as anyone else with the same system, unlike ANY brushed motor setup.

Eveyone's equal, but some are more equal than others... hehehe [:P]

Just went 5.5 too, eager to test it out real soon (even more tyre-shredding torque?!). Big dilemma as to which car to put it in... probably into one of the EvoIIIse to in place of its SS5800 - then I can do some back-2-back testing.

Unfortunately over here we race brushless with brushed modified... and the brushed boys are still going FASTER. Or rather the fast boys are still mainly using brushed motors, read it how you will.

The 5.5 has been out a fair few weeks now but there's been no sign of them domineering the last few race meets prior to xmas. Definitely stronger than SS5800 (which nobody races as they're too weak for mod) but maybe only on par with the existing Sphere/Neo or Schultz etc.

The advantages have already been covered, so i´ll just thorw in some info about the setup i use in my TRF 415.

I am running the LRP Sphere ESC, (This works for BOTH brushless and brushed motors!)

And i have combined it with the LRP Vector Star-3 motor, which in my opinion gives the 415 a quite amazing top speed..

I chose the LRP over the Novak because of the reputation of LRP, (have also heard from a lot of people, having trouble with their Novaks), and also because of LRP´s limited lifetime warranty, which i have had excellent experience with, once before, when my Quadra-charger stopped working. I sent them a mail, explaining my problems, and after this, they simply replaced it, no questions asked.. Nice...

Good luck on your choosing.

Cheers,

I like the sound of this ESC that does both brushed and brushless motors, whats its turn limit? how much will a brushless setup cost for ESC and motor? i plan to alternate the setup between my tc3 (when it arrives) and my baja champ. would like to run em in my twin det but thats just too wallet wrecking for me lol. thanks again guys, most helpful.

Both LRP Sphere and Novak's SS+ and GTB brushless ESCs can also run brushed motors... in Novak's case its "unlimited" turns (was reading the manuals last night).

However brushed motors use 2 wires (+ & -ve), brushless is a 3-phase device with 3 leads... when wired to a brushed motor you need to connect 2 of those leads together correctly.

This makes it pretty troublesome to do a regular swap and change... if wired incorrectly the ESC blows up. For the price - and today BL ESCs are priced the same as a high-end competition ESC, not cheap - you're probably better of buying 2 mid-range 'sport' ESCs for brushed motors.

Also brushless ESCs can only drive 1 BL motor, do not install 2 BL motors in any car where the motors are physically geared together at the transmission - one motor will toast itself by running out of phase.
