How do you guys restore rubber parts in your scorchers set. Especially the switch covers and the tyres? I want to soften them up as some are perishing and i want to save my good ones. I use tyre black to give a nice finish to them once they are on my models.

I use a good quality car dashboard cleaner/restorer/protector. Like Wynns Dash - It cleans and feed the rubber - protects against oxidation and give a marvellous shine as well. Its silicon based!!

Here in the states, Armor All is considered mostly as a protectant, but not necessarily a restorer. Full-sized car enthusiasts dislike the product for it's oily shine and slippery feel.

A great product for properly nourishing aging rubber comes from the Parts Shop of any BMW Dealer: GummiPflege is sold in a tube containing a sponge applicator tip. Part number is 82-14-9-407-015

The gel is applied and wiped off leaving a natural-looking matte finish to the restored rubber.

GummiPflege isn't silicone based. This is because silicone merely "coats" the outter surface while the unrestored rubber underneath continues to brown and perish.

Interesting stuff CarterTG !

Will check out the BMW dealers here - although I have to admit that it would be hard to beat the armour all - I have used it for ages !!

Never to old to learn new tricks though !!

I don't care for armour all. all of the 1:1 tires I have seen treated with it end up cracking baddly. I have used Mothers low shine dressing. I am curious abot the GummiPflege though. Cartertg, how much does the stuff cost?

GummiPflege sounds intriguing. I'll have to give that a shot. As a nice ghetto versio, i found that ordinary petroleum jelly (Vaseline) works wonders in softening up the rubber and making it pliable again.

It just needs a _lot_ of the stuff to get working, but its so cheap that really isn't much of a problem.

Also, i am in agreement about avoiding Armor-All. It really does make a nice pretty finish, but does nothing to help the rubber underfoot. I think it actually has been more of a destructive influence than a help for the uses i have tried it with in the past.

It seems like EONS since I bought a tube for my then new car... six years later, I still have 2/3rds of a tube left... my fuzzy memory seems to remember paying about $7-$9(usd).

In addition to restoring Tamiya parts, I highly recommend using this stuff for the weatherstripping around the doors & boot of a car. Those are probably some of the more delicate rubber parts in a car. GummiPhlege will keep it nurtured & supple.
