Just wondered if anyone else has done this to their RR SS?

A few of us back in the 80's actually ran with the rear as a monoshock. It really was simple to do, using the upgrade metal balljoints and a shock from an 1/8th car. We also reduced the amount of droop on the rear wishbones.

It did handle ok, but i think the twin shocks were still better, especially when coil over springs came out.

Just remembered also... The amount of metal that was ground away from all over the car to get the weight down, especially from the gearbox.

Sounds criminal now talking abut it, but had to be done at the time!!

I've got the remains of a monoshock RR in my loft. I think it is the type you are talking about obvious done by some race nut, as the rest of the chassis and all metal bits has hundreds of holes drilled in it, presumably to make it lighter.

I'll post pic later.

The monoshock was attached to the wishbones at the front of the gearbox, unlike the S/Champ. And the droop limiters were drilled underneath where the shock lay, vertically down through the g/box to where the wishbones toutched.

Speaking of removing metal - we used to grind off all the extra "ribbing" on the gearboxes - so all you had was a "smooth" gearcasing !!

Man the things we all seemed to have done in the name of "racing" back then !!

Wow, that's a crude monoshock! Love to know what spring is used!

The drilled holes are familliar, apart from the gearbox ones, where we would cut all the metal away.

Great pics though. icon_smile.gif

It's gonna take time, but i have about 8 SS/RR chassis ready to restore. All I want to do, is build 1 mint SS, and after reading this post, I'll do 1 modded one as well with all the bits.

Some say "time is a healer". It's just finding it that's the problem!!
