It is the driver who wins NOT the car! If you still think the car is not capable to run against modern racers you are wrong. If a vintage car is setup right it can outrun a moden car in the right hands.

Yes I really do think that brands like Tamiya lower their quality, I think the proof is self evident in their recent products. I know they've made improvements on this model. Carbon plates instead of FRP - Great. Carbon shock towers too - Brilliant. Improved strength front knuckles - Wonderful, but none of those will improve the drive.

I am not complaining that the Avante has been rereleased, I don't think anyone is doing that, the point I was trying to make, albeit borderline facetiously, was that your assertion that this rere will be strong enough to race against modern buggies is wrong.

I admire anyone who races Vintage Tamiya, in the past I have done it myself and it is fantastic fun in a Vintage Tamiya specific class but anyone who thinks that sticking a brushless in an Avante will make it competitive against modern buggies buggies like the 511 and B44 is in for an expensive disappointment.

They're entitled to make that expensive mistake of course, but it's not a racing machine, it's a ornament. It's the supermodel of the RC world - absolutely gorgeous to look at, but rubbish at performing.

I disagree. Considering the the pressures of manufacturing cost around the world (with the exception of China), trade imbalances, the race to devalue currencies, in this case the Yen, to match the dying dollar, it is remarkable that Tamiya has sustained a good level of quality. Not only a good level, but also the return of classic box art and blister packs with some of their re-re. Only once in my life have I seen a manufacturing defect in a Tamiya kit, ONCE!

As for price, again Europe, and the former republic known as the United States, are being destroyed by the private central banks. The end result is the Avante costing ~$450 dollars. It is not so much the cost of the kit, but the currencies not being worth toilet paper. Can't fault big T. really. In a healthy economy the Avante would have cost the consumer ~$300. Case in point the Dyna Storm. When I purchased the DS I paid $200 even. If the kit was released now it I bet it would have cost $300.

With that said, I believe the Avante is a kit not worth passing up. It is a definite buy for me, eventually.

I second Dynahead's post. Spot on.

I don't think Tamiya are implying or have implied that the Avante will be a breath of fresh air and that it will walk away with the 4wd off road championship trophy or that it's the 511X in another guise! This is a trip down memory lane, albeit with some material improvements for those of us who had one, wanted and one as kids back in the day but were not in a position to. It is fundamentally a 23 year old design and cannot hope to compete with its modern equivalents which for those who think it is are missing the point entirely i think with this re issue.

Totally agreed.

From the build up to all those shiny gold metal, body and carbon parts, this kit is a jewel, intended to be just as much displayed as used. Once I procure one. I will look into saving for another. I just might have to sell my 1/16 Sherman.

I've also been drooling over the old vanquish promo videos. It would be awesome if Tamiya re-re'd the Vanquish in the future. It would be a perfect heavy runner (maybe low level club racer?) for $200.

I think some individuals have misunderstood me. Is the Avante as good as Tamiya's new 5xx series of belt and shaft driven 4wd's, no. What Im saying is that the Avante has the basics that make a good and fun car to run at the CLUB level, it always had but back in the day the materials weren’t as strong and the cars limited suspension travel, weight, and bumpy tracks didn’t help it. The 2011 has newer materials that can only be stronger, the limited suspension travel isn’t as much a hindrance due to smoother tracks, and the weight problem can be solved by the horse power that brushless provides. The combination of available one ways (ebay), ball diffs (ebay), titanium screws and rods (ebay) add to the cars tuning potential. Now the car is pretty to look at and a little better to run than before.

Is it too late to pre-order this model now? I tried contacting a few places about pre-ordering near the end of last week but I only got two replies. The two responses I got were basically "I'll get more info later for you" and "It's not out 'til February". I know there's a few of these out there already but still... Too late now?

Have u tried rc champ? there are some on EBay I think :o

They were the first I tried but now they've stopped responding to me... Was it something I said? ;) Maybe they thought I wasn't serious or something?

Hey so has anyone confirmed or denied whether the C Parts are the same as the original? Do I sell my ones (if they are the same) or do I keep them to have a more authentic Avante, anyone busted open those parts bags to identify subtle changes etc?

cheers

first the new kit doesn't come with the ball diffs and torque splitter so i have a set to install.

I'm going back to the original style Drive Axles the CVDs can stay in the box.

I have a set of rubber covers for the ball joints to install.

and i have a box of old parts to compare the new ones to.

the C parts (that s u c k) seem to be the same as before, i'm going to switch them to aluminum aftermarket.

Tamiya sorta screwed up here, they beefed up the original part that wasn't too bad, and left the plastic part that always broke alone.

and of course the duraluminum cnc machined front parts are being replaced for originals.

Also a set of reproduction original decals so i can Fix up the license issues on the 2011 re-release.

the kits in my neck of the woods are 460$ a pop

Sounds like its gonna a machine that combines old and new and i suspect mine will be similar spec as yours only with TI rods and screw set added.

Mine will be box stock, perhaps I'll fit the TZ just so I can clear the jumps at the track without resorting to brushless.

Who wants to bet I'll break something upon the first landing? :)
