I have a 29Mhz Futaba 2PL radio that I use for some racing , and general bashing duties, and it has never let me down..

It has quite a nice feel, 10 model memory, with digital trims, steering exp, etc, so it is quite well equiped for a moderately priced radio..

I'm not sure what they are like as a 2.4Ghz unit, but you could only hope that they are as good or better than the crystal units..

The only negative is that its only a 2 channel radio, so you dont get that 3rd channel to turn lights on and off or run winches etc..

Cheers

The only bad point about the 2.4g unit that I've heard of, is that the receivers are not compatible with any other 2.4g transmitter. That means if your thinking about ever upgrading your transmitter, this radio is probably not for you...

I've used the 2PL 27mhz-AM and the 75mhz-FM. Both are great radios...

Any good for what? Gas cars, crawlers, electric cars? Its OK for anything apart from gas cars (as they need a third channel for break mixing) and crawlers.

Why not get the 3PL 2.4 instead? It has (sort of) replaced the 2PL 2.4. It brings brake mixing and 4WS to the 2PL's already capable list of usefull features.

94eg! brings up a valid point. The receivers are not FASST compatible, but still compatible with the 3PL 2.4, the 4YF 2.4 and the 4PL 2.4, so you can get another radio (of which the 4PL is the most advanced) and still keep any receivers you may have purchased for the 2PL 2.4. There are more and more Sport FHSS transmitters in the Futaba range and they are currenctly using the same technology and are thus interchangable.

So let me get this straight the 3PL recievers can be used with 3PM. Since I have no nitros or crawlers. Which one should I get 3pm-x. Im only going to be running my Rough rider and my street cars

If you don't already know what you want/need, then why upgrade?

I still run my AM (bashing) and FM (racing) radios with no trouble whatsoever. I haven't been able to find a real reason to upgrade to 2.4 myself...

The 3PL and 3PM series radios use different receivers. I don't think there are any hard fast rules on which Futaba receiver can be used with which transmitter in their 2.4GHz product line, you have to look it up to be sure.

In general, you'll find that within a product tier, ie PL, PM, or PK for Futaba, the receivers may be reusable but not always (I know the 3PM and 3PM-X both use the R603FF.) Between tiers they usually are not, although the higher priced radio may be able to use the lower end receiver (I think the 3PK/PKS can use the R603FF from the 3PM/3PM-X line as well as the R603FS.) As I said before there are no definite rules for this.

In order to clear things up:

Futaba has three lines of 2.4 GHz surface receivers. They are compatible with the following transmitters:

The FASST series (albeit the R603FF lacks the FASST feature "Diversity"):

R603FF - 3PM/3PM-MX, 3GR, 3VC(S)/3PK(S) (or any other transmitter using the FP-PK FSM2.4G module, such as 3PJ(S) and FF-3 or even the ancient "brick" 3PB), 4PK/4PKS in C1 mode

R603FS - 3PM/3PM-MX, 3GR, 3VC(S)/3PK(S) (or any other transmitter using the FP-PK FSM2.4G module, such as 3PJ(S) and FF-3 or even the ancient "brick" 3PB), 4PK/4PKS in C1 mode

The Futaba 4PK/4PKS native receivers:

R604FS - 4PK/4PKS

R604FS-E 4PK/4PKS

The basic Sport FHSS range:

R603GF - 2PL, 3PL, 4PL, Skysport 4

R2004GF - 2PL, 3PL, 4PL, Skysport 4

Please note the difference between the PL series that is a Sport FHSS range and the others that are part of the FASST range.

I hope this helps!
