Hello from another newbie

I dare say like many here I spent many an hour as a young boy in the local toyshop staring at the great tamiya models on show, Bigfoot being my most prominent recollection. Sadly it was all a dreamback then

My son is now eight and with no idea what he wants for Xmas I've seized the opportunity, got a great deal from Wonderland so one Rising Storm kit and rc gear now resides in the loft ready for the arrival of the bearded man in the red coat.

In the meantime I made the fatal mistake of browsing a certain auction website - I now have a grashopper 2, manta ray and fighter buggy heading my way for clean up / restoration. This place has already proven useful finding manuals and tips. Going to be a fun Xmas this year !!!!

It could be expensive too - i've now also got a Blitzer Beetle on the way too, which isn't the cheapest for parts from what i can see. It needs a new shell for starters - either that or make it into a demolition derby beetle

I too as a boy remember tamiya models at our local beaties store, now im starting up a modest collection, even my 6 year old lad has 4 cars already, a tamiya lunchbox and hornet, traxxas stampede and slash, its great to get out together with them.

Welcome to TC!

Yeah, that ebay is a very, very dangerous place!

I, like you guys, spent countless hours in the 80s looking at those marvellous box art boxes at the LHS with watering eyes...

Never thought I'd see a Holiday Buggy again... but there it was on the bay... At first settled with that. But I've been writing on my "Model car history" since 2000, and when I was googling for pics of the Kyosho Progress (which I also had as a kid), I found that I could actually buy one "NIB"!!! I was totally caught by surprise... I can what??? 20 years later!!! It's still a big mystery to me how someone can trace those old NIB kits!

After that it totally took off, I think I bought at least 20 cars the first autumn... and I'm now counting 65...

But boy is it satisfying!!!

And then you also have all those re-releases, I can't express fully what a great thing that is! Tamiya is just one of a kind!

Good luck to all of you!

Well the strip down an rebuild of the fighter buggy and manta ray proved good practice and gave me great familiarity with tamiya ways of construction. Rising storm built in about 7 hours today ( bar painting which will be done in the spring in better weather). Son impressed with my prowess :). Can't say I enjoyed cutting the lexan shell and wing, a lot more fiddly than the manta ray I did last week.

Tomorrow will be a great day - rising storm vs manta ray :)

Sounds like you are jumping right back into it head first.

Just don't be like me and have so many projects that you will never finish them all before your dead. LOL

Plus having a lot of projects with hard shell bodies sucks living in the PNW as you only get about 3-4 months of painting time.

Have fun and keep us posted on your progress.
