If i wanted to fit the servo`d fifth wheel that comes with them do you need to have the mfu on the truck, or is it just a case of plugging the servo into a spare channel on the reciever and away you go?

cheers

You can do it both ways.

But is it safe???

I mean a mistaken movement of the right stick could leave your trailer behind... :P

The Mfu has a special function, that turns on/off the coupler's servo.

I think you got to move left stick all way left and trim also to the left to activate/deactivate the leg's servo, it is not an all time operating function servo.

Then you can control the legs movement and the coupler's hook.

Yes, you can connect the fifth wheel servo to a spare channel and operate it without the MFU. A separate three position switch would be ideal for this. I would consider that safer than the MFU.

While the MFU does have a feature to lok/unlock the fifth wheel servo that added "safety" goes both ways. You move the left horisontal trim lever all the way to the right and then the left stick to the right. Now the coupler servo is engaged and can be operated by the right stick. You move it vertically and it now operates the coupler servo instead of the horn. If you forget to lock the coupler servo when you are done you will unhook the trailer when you sound the horn!
