jamesboynton 0 Posted November 19, 2010 Hi guys Wow! What a great site, so glad I found it. I recently bought an Original Hornet which I love... unfortunately I am entirely untechnical so have a few questions. Firstly the back suspension doesn't seem to push the body back up, is it a case of simply replacing the springs? or are they just there to look nice? Also, the speed controller (I think that's what its called) is a little glitchy, when i go full throttle on the controller the speed contoller does its job and moves but the car doesn't, only when i take a little off the throttle does the car shoot into action. Its the same if I try to start it going slowly, seems to do nothing for a few degrees then shoots into action. Could the metal parts simply need a clean? Any help or advice would be great. Cheers James
30cms 7 Posted November 19, 2010 Hi James For the speed controller, I suggest you bin it and replace it with an electronic speed controller. The Tamiya TEU 101 BK is a simple replacement (look on ebay - should only be about 17 quid) For the rear shocks, a good place to start is give them a strip and rebuild. You will need some damper oil! The Hornet is a great car. I have had many in the past, and still got 4 Hornets + Grasshoppers. Parts are plenttful too, as this model (and the GH) was re released a few years back
moxyuk 0 Posted November 19, 2010 Hi James I agree with 30cms use a new tamiya esc and ditch the old msc they are only good for a shelf queen. And where pain to use back in there day Parts are easy to find on ebay etc which helps when the car is a runner and all you need is a vintage lunchbox now. Might be worth getting a rere manual to help with stripping and repairs. Cheers Mark

Cheers James I would try to clean the contacts and then take the top piece off and bend it a lillte so it makes better contact. I used race a Hornet back in the 80's bought several new. A remember those issues. Rob

jamesboynton 0 Posted November 23, 2010 Thanks for all the tips guys, think I will give the electronic speed controller a go, is it hard to install? and do I need to replace the other part of the servo (the arm bit that controls the throttle). Will also take a look at the suspension. On another note, does anyone know of anyone who does repairs/tweaks in Aberdeen Scotland? Would happily pay to have things done properly Cheers again for all the help so far J
30cms 7 Posted November 23, 2010 Thanks for all the tips guys, think I will give the electronic speed controller a go, is it hard to install? and do I need to replace the other part of the servo (the arm bit that controls the throttle). Will also take a look at the suspension. The esc will replace the old speed controller and servo. It will plug straight into your receiver, in the place the speed control servo goes. You need a BEC receiver though! (it will say BEC on it . . . ) Dead easy to install too. It'll make sense when you come to fit it.
