nope they are identical

Unless you have one of the rare early Hot Shots with the three-hole bumper, in which case the front gearbox is slightly different.

But the re-re Hot Shot bumper is identical to the later version of the original Hot Shot, even the plastic used appears to be identical.

Sorry, it's not identical.

There are 3 Hot Shot versions:

1st one, very rare (I own this). Front gearbox was different, weaker with a smaller and softer front bumper.

2nd one, the Hot Shot everybody knows.

3th one, the rerelease.

In the re-release the diff joints have different clips. In the first and second release they are hold in place with the C-clips. In the Re-release one they are hold in place with the E-clips.

You know the C-clips are thin like hairs so this is the reason Mr Tamiya switched to the E-clips, bigger and easier to use.

So the new gearbox has more room in the Ball Bearings place to allows the presence of the E-clip. You can use new gearboxes on your old Hot Shot but if you use them with the old C-clips the diff gears will move inside the box and you will mealt them. Use the E-clips and you will solve the problem.

I think that is the answer I was looking for, I have replaced my gear box case with a new one and the gears dont mesh properly, sounds like a bag of nuts. So I just put the E clips on to the original drive cups? And that should sort it?

Hmm, I didn't notice this... Going to have to go for a rummage for parts to compare...

The new gearboxes allow more room to fit the e-clips over the output shafts, so if you intend to re-use the original c-clips, put a small metal washer over one shaft to take up the slack. Otherwise you will intermittently lose power to the wheels whilst the differentials slip.

Good info! I lost a c-clip on my original boomer and had to temporarily replace it with a E-clip, that would be why the front gearbox is a little tight, will replace it asap.

Hi. Does anyone know if the gear case is slightly different between the original and the re-release? Cheers :-)

Both the front and rear gear casings are the same as the Boomerang's. You can get them on eBay for around a tenner for both. The prop shafts are different and the Boomerang one will fit on the hotshot/hoptshot 2 if you change the prop joints to the Boomerang's.

I'm after a hotshot 1 chassis or a hotshot 2 speed contoller stay if you can help?

I think i can help you with the speed controller stay.

I have 3 restored H/S 2's and replaced the chassis with new ones of E Bay.

Send address and will post when i can. BE patient as tend to forget.

I can now definitely confirm that the Hot Shot re-release gearboxes are different.

To satisfy my curiosity, I pulled apart my original Hot Shot today and compared the gearbox halves with a re-re parts tree - and yes, the bearing carrier holes for the rear driveshaft outputs are ever so slightly deeper on the re-re.

I’m about to replace the original gearbox joints in my ’86 boomerang gear boxes with rerelease gearbox joints. Hence, this thread is very timely.

I’d appreciate help with three questions:

1) So I’d need to use c-clips, not e-clips. Correct?

2) I notice that the rerelease gearbox joints are slightly different. They have an extra ledge on the axel behind the cup. Why have Tamiya made this change, is it going to be a problem with the original gear box casing and are there any other changes to the rerelease casing to accommodate this ledge?

3) Finally, the hotshot manual includes using urethane bushings in the gearbox joint cups, but the Boomerang manual doesn’t. What are these bushings meant to do? Should I get some for my Boomerang?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

If you are using Re re gearbox case you need the new re joints too with large e clips. You can't just put in re re joints. Im sure these are called e clips maybe wrong but i call them e clips.

The small c clips are really hard to take off and need to be used with original cases. As said before you cant mix and match joints and cases as i found out.

Not sure what you mean on the urethane bushes unless you mean plastic bearings. If so use bearings through out the entire drive train.

All my shots are very quiet to run. Plastic bearings start to flog out straight away causing bad mesh tolerance and lots of noise.

On a good note the re re joints will accept cvd's from the DF01 range such as Yeah Racing ones. I have cvd's in my Boomerang, Hot Shot, Big Wig. Manta Ray.

1) You will need to use the original C clips.

2) The cutaway just gives more clearance between the output and the gearbox hole. Makes no difference to the fitment.

3) The urethane bushings are just foam pieces that push the rear driveshafts into the axles, all they will do is stop the driveshafts rattling as I don't ever recall a problem of the rear driveshafts falling out. The bushings aren't used in the front.

Hi, not sure whether to reply to this 12 year old thread or start a new one?  I just wanted confirmation on parts compatibility for an old original 5847 Hotshot.  A colleague asked me to restore it for her son.  Amongst the list of broken bits is one of the front gearbox joints/drive cups or whatever you want to call it. The original part is SA10 (with the c clips).  As they're not available (in the UK) I'm planning to replace the parts with the re release updated parts.  I've read the posts above and can see that the original drive shafts don't fit the new cups and the gearbox housing has been altered slightly so below is a list of re release parts that I plan to fit, can anyone please confirm if this will work and if I'm missing anything?

9808129 gearbox joints

9808128 drive shafts

50823 wheel axles

9115191 G parts (gearbox casing)

50648 From hubs/uprights

The front gearbox internal gears looks the same so I was going to use them in the new casing but can anyone confirm if they're not?

I've also bought re release front and rear suspension arms (shock mounts were broken on both) but these look identical.

Any help would be appreciated.
