Hi Everyone,i`m new to the forum ,after my son having numerous of these cheap r/c cars from superstores and them only lasting five minutes i thought this year santa should bring him a proper R/c motor and he wanted an off roader and what better to start him off but a Lunchbox (he`s only 6yrs old) i pre assembled it before xmas as i thought he would want to use it straight away but left it unpainted till he picked the colour he wanted which he did and we painted it yesterday, however i thought it might be a bit boring for him to run it alone so strangley enough santa brought me a lunchbox too (i`m just a big kid at heart) .i took my lad down the beach with them on boxing day and found that the two small springs on the rear axle lasted about five mins so i set about dismantling one of his cheap r/c cars for a pair of shocks and fitting one to his and mine in place of these 2 springs but having read through a few topics on here i see that this is quite commonly done.

Welcome to the club, and to "proper" RC fun. Lunchie is a spot on choice to start with, and the "Third Shock Mod" is a definite must have, and if you've worked that one out for yourself before consulting these boards, you're going to get a lot out of this hobby!

Great story as your intro too - hope you and your lad have hours of fun with them! (not that I have any doubt about that )

I must admit me and my son are having great fun with these and its a good way of us going out and spending some quality father /son time  ,i am thinking a motor upgrade from the standard 540 will be next on the list but not knowing a great deal about them what would you guys recommend as the next step up in motors?

Nice work mate, couple of tidy Lunchies there. Without upgrading the ESC you could chuck a Tamiya Sport Tuned in it, nice and cheap. If you want to upgrade the ESC for a higher turn motor then a 21T Orion or something works well, or a Tamiya Superstock BZ (23T) - got one in mine. Lots of Lunchy threads on here though with tons of info. MTronics Viper 21T ESC is what's in mine too by the way.

I got myself a Lunchbox a year or two back and think it's great with a standard 540. I'd personally enjoy it and if I wanted something faster get another buggy. I was bought a Rising Fighter for Christmas (as it was going cheap and basically a Hornet/Grasshopper clone for less cost - grateful and happy I was too) but if I was to buy myself I'd get a rere of something else 'cos that's what I'm in to or something more modern - I'm also tempted by an Ansmann Mad Rat as it's so cheap and good for the cost or a 'modern' Tamiya like a Sand Viper.

Anyway, enjoy the Lunchie as it is. I think it's great!

Had my Lunchbox since 1990, great fun. I'm about to go back to a stock silver can standard motor in mine. Having tried a few hotter motors I find the Lunchbox cant handle well enough to cope with the speed, its fine in a straight line.

I have got most of the recomended mods, oil shocks & third shock. But having recently smashed the shell & cracked the chassis I think I need to tone mine down a bit.

I'm going to be rebuilding it soon with new shell, chassis & the FX10 front arm mods. Should be great when completed.

Hi

I had a ansmann macnum which is basicly the same and tbh its a piece of rubbish, the clutch slips like mad, they are cheap ive had my lunchbox for 3 years now and its always been the one thats put the biggest smile on my face.

Im not trying to put you off the mad rat but i think you may be a little dissapointed with it :(

Thanks for the comments guys,am thinking that i`ll kept the standard motor for now as i dont really want to spoil the fun factor we`re getting from these and i think it would take some convincing of the wife before i could go and purchace another car :) .i took the lad out with them yesterday and after hitting each other i had snapped the plastic arm off the steering servo which brough our outing to an end as i dont have a spare ,where can i find a spare arm as the local shops to me dont stock them and are there any stronger servo arms that can be purchased as i think how easily this one broke its likley to happen again :(

I bought my son a LB for his 7th birthday, he (and I) love it so much I bought myself one.

I recommend the Sports Tuned motor as an upgrade and I also have the CVA shocks on mine. One other thing is the Parma shell for the boys, if you dont mind the original shell getting destroyed that is :)

Enjoy!

For spares check ebay, sellers like tonys tamiya parts

Online there is modelsport , fusion hobbies and tamiyaparts, the latter being great for actual stock, prices and delivery.

Prices on ebay are often higher than other online retailers so be careful.

Your local hobby shop should have a selection of the usual bits that break - nothing worse than selling someone a kit, and then a few days later them coming back looking for spares which you then have to order in.

It might be a good idea to find out the weak points of the LB from other users, and buy yourself a few bits n bobs to have to hand.
