Might be a tight fit in the hole (those Mabuchi 3-piece cans are a little fatter than chromecans), there's no screws to hold it and definitely the motor cover would need to be modified (wires both come out on 1 side).

The gear case on these buggies is about as unfriendly as it can get. The easy solution would be to eliminate the pins inside and drill a hole so the you can use one screw to hold the motor in. If you made this modification, you would be limited to the stock mabuchi motor. Like Willy said, a techni-series motor might be a tight fit. Not only is the can bigger, but the motor sticker will get in the way also.

I spent some time looking at the gear cases and it appears that the outer lip is the problem. I'm talking about the endbellside. It tapers in -so- I filed for about 5 mins and now the motor slides in great. I also drilled the pins out and made new holes for the wire to come out of. However the endbell is a tad bit larger than the stock so I placed so rubber "O"-rings as spacers.

The big thing that I found was how little material it took to make it fit. To place it safe I did it to a superchamp gear box first [:}]

Why would you do that? Now you ruined two gearboxes... [:o)] LOL

Willy, did you jsut said it isn't screwed in? [:o] How do you make sure it doesn't fall out then? [B)]

Willy is right, the motor is not bolted in. The motor is kept in by the plastic cap that goes over the motor and is bolted to the cage.

So THAT's it. I was thinking: "Why won't a Black Motor fit". (read this @ BlazerFrazer's)

I also just found out holding your Black Motor near your computer-screenis really that smart... [xx(] Fancy colors though! [:o)]

The black motor will fit into the Rough Rider. I have one in my runner. Its just that the cap will not fit on correctly. The reason being is that the end bell on a black motor is mated to the can differently than the silver can mabuchi. The plastic cap will bolt onto the tranny case but you have to turn it one set of screws. The bulges on the cap will not line up with the bulges on the tranny case.

Wait black motor is in the gear box. And the end cap is on now on. I took the pins out and filled it with a little JB weld. Works great. The black motor and any open endbell motor fits in now.

i,ve just spent last couple of hours fitting a tamiya sport tuned motor to my rough rider "runner", and i found it didn,t fit aswell. i never modified the gearbox though!, because the motor is painted black, after a while of attempting to fit this motor i noticed the paint was coming off in certain places - especially around the very front area. the motors dimentions are identical to a standard 540, but on my black motor had "high spots" in the metal casing, so all i did was carefully file out these "high spots" until it fitted ok, then i finished rubbing it down with wet and dry paper - quite coarse stuff. in the end i had a pefectly fitting motor, but the motor now has no paint on it!.

these cars do have some odd moments dont they!!!

Just to throw this squib into the fire...

Quite a few motors will fit the gearcase *IF* you're willing to lose the rear plastic cover. Motor cans all differ in size, its all a matter of manufacturing tolerances... if its a bit tight then that's good too - to hold it in. [:D] Press it in gently with a padded vice. The motor cover doesn't do much, and it isn't even waterproof.

Don't even bother drilling more holes or filing it if so - the friction is good enough to hold 540s in. To make sure it stays in, try some silicone sealant between motor and case too (but makes it rather a pain to change motors).

If the only reason that you want to replace the motor is that you cannot find new stock of plastic endbell motors... have you looked inside a handheld vacuum cleaner or cordless drill lately? [8D] Choose the cheap China-made ones too, more likely to be plastic endbelled.

Heh heh heh... nothing like a good peek!

Got a white endbell motor ripped from some old gadget that fitted the RR nicely... now it just sits as a half-completed runner waiting for electronics & shell. [:)]
