Just got myself a trf415msx to be user for some silvercan racing. Don't know the exact spur/pinion teeth count on it but rough estimate by counting with fingernail is 80/40

I know I can use the rw racing black Xray spurs that come in many sizes.

What's a good starting point for fast open tracks where top end seems to matter most?

Tyia

Edit I just had another look and it's actually 84t spur and 52t pinion I've got on it. Not tested it flat out yet. Those ratios be any good for a silvercan?

the Tamiya should fit any standard 64p or 48p spur/pinions

As which to run, go to the track and just ask around. There bound to be someone at the track to tell you where you should start. Also ask about tires :(

first attempt at racing this car didnt go well!

it came from ebay and had an 82t spur and 50t,51t and 52t pinions. the racing is silvercan stock class and the track is fairly open.

the first motor lasted 1 1/2 heats of 5 minutes before frying with the 52t pinion installed. the 2nd motor lasted about 5 laps before everything stopped, when i got home i noticed a brush lying on my floor that mustve snapped and dropped out! this was with the 50t pinion.

transmission ration for trf415msx is 2.187

so

82t spur and 52t pinion gives FDR of 3.45

82t spur and 50t pinion gives FDR of 3.59

what kind of FDR do i need to stop this severe overheating and keep up with the racing? been told 4.5-4.8?

have ordered spurs in 64dp of 68t and 70t and some pinions ranging from 17t to 23t

think ive got undergearing now tho with FDRs ranging from 9.01 to 6.47

any advise from owners of similar cars would be gratefully received!

I think the advice you got from the track is going to be as good as any.

The last time I raced a tourer with a silvercan was with my TT-01 at 6.03:1 and that was comfortable on the motor temp.

I think you may have made the wrong call with your gearing purchases though, you've gone from one extreme to the other, and I wouldn't even be sure that those small spurs and pinions will actually mesh on the TRF. If you had gone for a larger spur (say 90) and a couple of slightly smaller pinions (say 42 and maybe a 40 or 44 either side) I think you could have got some sensible ratios as suggested, and it would definitely fit because the combo is the same effective meshing size as the 82 spur and 50 pinion.
