Hi all

Im mykel320 a new member ,

First what a great site a wealth of knowledge and inspiration.

I was on another site but got kicked out when it was decided that my Clod QD was a toy and not a proper Machine

But i really dont care its such good fun.

can anyone shed any light on the QD version ( after much research ) ive found out a small amount, but am here hoping for some help to find out about bodyshells for this model.

Ive a full, very clean running chassis but no body, and wondered if i can fit any other bodyshells to this chassis?

Ive the original box with manuel and original tamiya radio gear and the whole thing runs great.

can anyone help as i dont know what im looking for or how to fix it when i find it ,,lol.

I think the pic attached is the correct shell but any advise is welcome

thanks for letting me join with my toy truck!!

regards

Mykel 320

deepest cornwall

P.S Im not sure if im even asking in the correct forum so sorry in advance

I don't know much about the Clod QD (or any of the QDs as far as that goes) but getting booted out because it's a toy. Good grief, they're ALL toys when it comes down to it! I'd be willing to bet you won't get any of that sort of elitist rubbish with this site. If it's an RC and it makes you grin when you run it, you'll be welcome here!

I used to have a small Tandy/Radio Shack 4x4 truck that looked A LOT like the 1/14 Clod. I bet the bodies would be an easy swap. There are toys out there that have some pretty cool bodies you could make fit with a little time and creativity. Otherwise, perhaps join the QD sig and haunt the forums to see if you can't turn up some info on the 1/14 Clod QD.

Good Luck and welcome aboard.

Here we don't have any distinction between types of r/c car, as long as it's radio controlled it doesn't matter what it is.

There are a few fans of the Quick drives here http://www.tamiyaclub.com/sig_member.asp?id=50

and I even have one myself

Tamiya did sell parts for the Quick Drives, but finding them today is very difficult. The QD Clod came out ion the early 90s so you have to be lucky to find anyone who still has spares for it.

A full parts list for the QD Clodbuster is on TamiyaUSAs website here and lists the body parts with numbers:

Body 7800635

body sticker 7800587

roll bar 7800636

windows 7800634

Parts are hard to find, I would suggest contacting TC member Victor101car as he used to list a lot of QD spares and he now sells plenty of QD spares on ebay.

As an alternative body you could have a look at the ministock bodies for Mardaves made by Kamtec, they have a 178mm wheelbase and are 170mm wide.

I hate this attitude. EVERYTHING RC is a toy.

Anyways, I had one of these years ago. Lots of fun. Good luck finding a body and if you do, post pics!

Hi all

Wow real people,,,, LOL

Thanks for the welcome and I think ive found the right site .

I said to the OTHer site that everything rc was tecnically a toy and the responce i got was a barrage of swearing and abuse from "PROPER RC MECHANICS" (LOL) who i was told have spent thousands on there "TOYS".

Anyway nice to be here and thanks for the tips. I will get right on it.

Im a dab hand with my meccanno so will start looking at other body shells and ease of fitting. I might build my own custom rc robot with webcam and infra red for patrolling the garden for cats at night ,but we will see.

I did see in the gallery a Clod with a motorised rocket launcher and cam built on , this is my sort of thing , a bit Steam punk!

oh i found this manual online for a Blackfoot and it seems to have the correct body fittings eg the lip at the frount and a single hole in the middle of the flat bed (see below)

Thanks all

gonna get the meccanno out now

:lol::huh:

You can find a full list of Tamiya RC models here..

http://www.tamiyaclub.com/cars.asp

Clicking on each model number will reveal details of the model, members rides, manual and parts list (maybe QD models are less populated in detail and info than other models, but you should get some info there).

Most of the QD versions fall around model numbers 46000 to 46018, of which there are several 'monster truck' style models....

46004 Midnigth Pumpkin

46006/7/8 - versions of Monster Beetle

46012 Clod

46016 Blackfoot

46018 low ride pumpkin

Whilst each model will have some differences to chassis design and body mounting, the bodies themselves will be the right scale size and may give you more scope of picking up something via ebay etc.

A quick scan of ebay for 1/12 body came back with a load of hits , from cheap stockcar shells (£5) right through to a finished Lunchbox shell at £45 ! You should find some inspiration there, a Monster Mini lol ???

Yes, after 30 years of r/c racing and many thousands of pounds and a huge collection, yet I still regard them as toy cars. :D

The only "proper r/c mechanics" are employed by the r/c companies, there's only a handful of them in the world and they don't hang around on websites. I bet they don't call someone who fixes their own 1/1 car as a 'proper mechanic'.

Hi there Terry

Thanks for the tech and the numbers there all checking out now ,(making sence)lol...

Just looked at your QD and wandered if you have a picture of the onderside of the body shell, specifically the front fitting ( im really new to this but quite technical) once i have seen one i will know how to proceed.

Going to have a look at the kamtec range you suggested The Clod QD is 1/4 ? but have seen a Subaru rat body on e bay that i love but cant judge the scale,,

Hi! Welcome to the forum!

QD's are a great way to get into Tamiya, and if I'm totally honest, not that far off in terms of speed to their big brothers!

I currently have 2x clods, 1 blackfoot, 1x thundershot, 1x supersabre and a Pumpkin clone (which I think I bought from Talesin!)

I got the first Clod for nothing from a lovely guy I won an old r/c VW Golf from. It needed a bit of tlc, but thanks to people on here and ebay, I have managed to restore most of it. Its now running a modded steering servo, ESC and a grasshopper rear gearbox with a 540 motor! She flies!!

The Blackfoot was a clod that I painted the chassis on and I found a NIP Blackfoot shell and accessories on ebay, so she looks like new!

The Thundershot is running a brushless motor (11t i think!) and this goes like mad! 2 runs and I've almost killed some new knobbly tires!

The Supersabre is running the QD upgrade Black motor and has gold rims. I use some high power AA NIMH rechargable batteries which helps it get a bit of speed out of it.

The Pumpkin clone is made for Tandy by a company called GO, and this is standard apart from some bling rims.

Parts are few and far between, but if you are prepared to wait and search ebay, there are some parts still around. As said, Victor101 is a great guy and has a lot of QD spares, as does Jim Sourbeck (Jims Hobby Store).

The QD Clod is 1/14th scale, the Brat body like most bodies is 1/10th scale so a lot bigger.

Good choices and a monster mini will be a bit different to the norm!

Don't forget to look at cheap Chinese toys in supermarkets and pound shops, these ca sometimes throw up shells of the correct size and drivers figures!

Measure your wheelbase and cut a piece of paper or string the correct length to use as a measure when out shopping lol!!

I modded up a Quick Drive Monster Beetle for my niece.

First thing I did was fit it out with hobby class radio gear, a servo for the steering and fitted an ESC. It took a bit of cutting and to make up a servo mount and steering links. Once this mod was done it drives more like a 'real' r/c (as that other site put it). I've done this same mod to 1:16 scale 'toy grade' buggys, some even with micro brushless systems and full bearings.

Bodies from Nikko or Tandy will pretty much fit straight on being the same scale/size. There's lots to choose from in this range. Also you do see quite a few toys with suitable bodies and some of them have alot of scale detail. All you need to do is get a measurement of the wheelbase of the chassis and keep your eyes open when in toy shops and department stores for something the same size. We bought a friction powered Jeep Renegade for my 7 yr old a few weeks ago, it's just a toy with no steering, but the body would fit nicely onto a Quick Drive monster chassis.

To improve the model it just takes a bit of thinking outside of the box. Measure the size of the part you have, then search for the same size part from another model, then adapt it to fit. Like the pogo-stick shocks, an alloy oil damper from another model will be the same length and will fit on with only slight modifications.

Hi all

Not Been on in a while (had a bad Kiteing accident) ,, But have now modded and fitted a bodyshell to my clod.

After some great advice from this forum i bought a £1.50 Charity shop ABS body toy truck and got to cutting. Duplicated the slot in at the front end and drilled the mounting screwhole (in 2 attempts ,,,sorry 3 attempts)

Some wheelarch trimming is still needed and a final paint job, but It was doing donuts in a wet car park yesterday and bouncing down the slopes in the park. No Problems.

Seems to have to much power to weight so might try adding some weight to the back end.
