Hi all, after getting back into this hobby over christmas, I already want another car. Me and my son have buggys, Sand Vipers, but I want something with a little bit larger wheels and ground clearance to enable it to tackle slightly rougher ground than the buggys are capable of. I really like the look of the Stadium Bltzer but equally, I now fancy something 4WD, what can anyone advise a look at? Tamiya only as I like them please.

Thanks.

If it has to be tamiya, 4wd and bigger wheels, a twin detonator or clod springs to mind, both twin motor's and fun to drive, but then are you looking for a fast truck or a scaler, cc01's or cr01's would fit the bill.

CC-01's make a nice change from a buggy. I got one and added a 55 turn motor. It's slower, torquey great fun. Long (very long) run times and realistic action. Body roll on cornering, lights for night-time fun.

Interesting to build too...

Lunchbox is still pretty cheap and will give you sufficient speed for it's higher chassis, or a midnight pumpkin. Rather unstable compared to a buggy but that's half the fun !

+1 on the Lunch Box.

I was in the same position a few months ago, but decided to get the Hornet and Blackfoot extreme. Both are very fun to bash.

The Hotshot is also a fun one.

"Larger wheels".. "4WD"...

Lunchbox / Pumpkin have larger wheels but are still 2WD, and the hotshot is just a buggy with 4WD.

The solution to your conundrum has CLOD written all over it.

I think it depends what you want to do with it?

I know you said Tamiya only but......

Rough ground, lumps, bumps and jumps? personally I would gor for a truggy - HPI E-Firestorm or similar

Crawling? then for me it has to be an Axial Honcho awesome in standard form, 2nd choice for me is a CC-01, with a few mods these are quite capable trucks...

Just my opinion chaps... <_<

Benson,

apart from the Clod, look into the Wild Dagger/Twin Detonator/Dual Hunter series of 4WD, twin motor cars. They are more off-road capable than the buggies, but not so fast or sophisticated. And motor selection is limited to types that can run run both CW and CCW.

Currently, I'm having fun with a 1:8 TNX electric conversion. It's Tamiya, it has big wheels, and it's very off-road capable :-)

Twin Detonator - they are still available in shops or ebay: http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/item.php?product-id=58309

Fast, fun and reliable. 4x4 with big tires, will handle very rough ground. Nice in stock form, but dramatically improved with a few upgrades like sport tuned motors and esc, ball bearings, oil shocks and steel pinion.

Clod Buster - what else can you say: http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/item.php?product-id=58321

More fun than should be legal. 4x4 with HUGE tires, will handle anything you can throw at it. Period. Same comments as above.

Lunchbox - cheap as chips and everybody should own one: http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/item.php?product-id=58347

Big wheels, big wheelies, 2wd only, but who cares, you never see anyone frowning whilst driving one.

Mad Bull - like a Lunch Box with Buggy Body except it doesn't do wheelies: http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/item.php?product-id=58205

See comments for Lunchbox. So ugly only a mother could like it, but FUN, FUN, FUN.

TXT - How serious about monster trucks are you? http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/item.php?product-id=58280

Levant - perhaps the ugliest thing Tamiya has ever made, but seriously fun to drive: http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/item.php?product-id=57789SD

Brushless, big tires, reasonable ground clearance but enough power to not matter.

Super Levant: http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/item.php?product-id=57796

Everything about the Levant except more - more ugly, more power, more money. If you can get past that, you'll probably have fun driving it.

Stadium Blitzer: http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/item.php?product-id=58482

What a treat to drive, even if only 2wd. You won't be sorry, and it goes about anywhere. Tough as old boots.

Those are a few options that I would recommend that seem to fit your criteria. Can't really go wrong with any of them, just depends on how much money you want to spend and what strikes your fancy. Good Luck.

One that has been missed is the TA02/DF01 offroad 4WDs like the Hummer, TA02 trucks.

...Or take a 4WD buggy, fit a Tamiya truck body on it, then fit large wheels.

Example: DF01 buggy (Manta Ray/Blazing Star) with TA02 tub and Ford F-150 body and Twin Detonator wheels. I've done very similar to this with my TA02 Ford F-150 truck except I used HPI MT2 wheels and tyres. It's fast, stable, big wheels and can handle a 4600Kv brushless without problems. Effectively makes a Tamiya 4WD stadium truck.

Thanks very much guys. Taliesin, much appreciate the trouble you went to, given me much food for thought, I must admit, I just don't like the Clod, don't know why, it's just not my thing, of the others, I'd settled on the Stadium Blitzer, then I'd settled on the Lunchbox, then I'd settled on the Dual Impact / Twin Detonator....

I can discount crawlers and the TXT and the Madbull, I'll keep looking.

Thanks again.

Oh to live in the states, levant brushless built with radio gear for $180 !

Mark has me thinking now - need a big set of wheels for my blitzer beetle !

Resurrecting this thread from last week to ask what's peoples experience with the Dual Hunter, twin detonator, wild dagger series.

I've three 4wd buggies in the stable, plus a 2WD Blitzer Beetle, so am thinking a twin motor truggy might be suffiicently different ?

I know the Clod is only £50-60 more, and its indestructible, but its a bit too much 'truck' for me.

"Doesn't. Like. The Clod".

Hehe.. my first reaction was a bit of gentle ribbing to the tune of hinting at being a bit mad, but to be honest with you I can understand where you're coming from. I wasn't really that phased by Clodbusters until I joined this site. Reading peoples experiences with them really did get me wondering what all the fuss was about though, and I bought one a little bit on impulse as a treat for myself on my 40th birthday.

Seeing a Clod in the flesh as it were is a very difficult experience to describe. Awe inspiring, is probably a good start. Seeing it there, there's that 12 year old boy inside us all that can't help but grin at a monster truck, even if you're not really that in to them. The odd thing is, there isn't a picture in the world that really captures that "aura" or "presence" that Clods have until it's sat on your workbench.

Whilst I realise the cost of an NIB Clod is probably a bit much to chance on an unquantifyable experience as it were, I really do think everyone should have one - especially if you love customising and tinkering with your RCs.
