Hi, just built my Rising Fighter (my 2nd build after my Lunchbox a couple of years ago) and have a couple of questions. The first is that reverse seems to be quite slow and seems to take a second or two to kick in compared to going forward (and sounds like it is whining slightly). Is this normal?

Also, it has a Mtroniks Sport 20 Speed Controller and I had to click the Acoms controllers CH2 switch to 'R' rather than 'N' otherwise pushing the stick forward sent the car into reverse and vice versa. Have I wired something up wrong? It works when in the 'R' position but I want to make sure it's ok to run it like this.

Thanks

Hi there, mine is the same in my buggy, no handbrake turns with the Mtroniks speedo compared to a mechanical one... i used to love pelting forwards at full tilt and then slamming it into reverse whilst pulling hard left... nice skids, even managed a few 720's with a hot motor!!

As far as I know the Sport 20 is 50% reverse power. This means it will go half speed in reverse compared to forward. If the motor is tuned with high advance this exaggerates to poor reverse performance. The whining is the FETs in the ESC running at 1/2 power. It should make a similar whining sound in forward at partial throttle.

The ESC is entry level. Has a reverse delay and poor brakes (that 50% reverse power).

This is normal. Some ESCs need CH2 to be reversed. You would know if you had it wired backwards to the motor as forward would be 50% power and reverse would be very fast. The brakes would also only work when travelling backwards.

Did you calibrate the ESC correctly ?

the first movement of the stick is taken as forward (as far as the esc is concerned).

Another option is you have the motor wires crossed - i think its oraange from the esc to yellow on the motor, and blue esc to green motor of the top of my head but can check later if you like)

Whether the stick is in N or R doesn't really matter though - it operates the same.

Mine kicks into reverse pretty quickly, far quicker than the Tamiya 101 esc on my sons Rising Storm.

good point oh wise one

Hi, sorry to bring this topic up again, but have just started to use my Rising Fighter again after not using it for ages (due to weather and not having time). It' seems to be running funny. Sometimes it isn't going forward when I press forward on the control and other times it is just going forwards withou me pressing anything.

Any ideas what I need to do this, or can I just reset the ESC? How would I do this?

Thanks again.

Still with the RV20?

These auto calibrate when you first turn them on. If the trim is adjusted after it can affect it. Turn it all off, set the trim to centre then turn it back on and hit forwards. See if that fixes it...

I'm actually away at work at the minute but back at the weekend. I should be able to try it then. It sounds as if it might work though. I must admit I'm not too keen on the ESC. Is there a good cheap option out there? I will be keeping the buggy standard so nothing fancy would be needed I don't think.

The Mtronics/Modelsport RV12 assault costs a little more and you have to set it up manually, but it is Lipo battery ready and performs better I'n my opinion. I only run 2 20Autos, the rest of mine are RV12's and they handle everything.

Sounds like the trim adjusters have moved on your handset - rest to zero, then turn on TX, then RX

I have a sport auto 20 in an old Manta Ray and its not too bad an ESC - yes its budget level, but its easy to set up (90% automatic), is waterproof and pretty reliable. It as ts limitations regarding settings (brake power, reverse delay etc as TA-Mark pointed out earlier) but its OK for a mildly tuned motor (I have a 21turn in my 'Ray)

I've got the RV12 ESC in a Blitzer Beetle running a 17x2turn motor runs fine, needs a bit of setting up, but has added features like lipo voltage cut off, and some degree of 'programmability'. Once you have a bit of RC experience is probably worth paying £6 more for over the sport auto 20, but for those newish to the hobby the lesser ESC is easier to handle (and gives comparable function to the basic Tamiya esc at half the price)

Well, managed to get back from work today which was nice and mangedtosort the Rising Fighter out, and using the above advice it worksfine. Thanks all. I will probably just stick to the current ESC for this buggy for now too as I really enjoyed blasting away as it is! B)
