Finally found some time to build my 2011 Avante.... found some minor differences not mentioned in Tamiya official description between the rere Avante and the original Avante

will try to list them as i go along with my build....

And now on to the pics...

1st step of the instruction is to build the rear gearbox and motor, and this is the 1st minor differences

The motor plate for the 2011 is different from the original 1988

1 complain i have is some of the screws parts bags are not label... Tamiya onli had label for bag A~F, another 3 bags of screws/misc parts were not label

Great build thread. I have ordered mine today from Stella but have never pinted a clear shell before. How is this done? Do you spray from inside of mai shell? How about undercowel and rear wing? What do you mean by Lame Flake? so many questions sorry - Thanks for s Great thread.

Yep, you spray on the inside of the shell, same with the undercowl and wing. Make sure you clean the shell properly (instructions on how are included as part of the manual), use the correct type of paint (PS spray is the Tamiya one) and try not to overspray otherwise you'll have drips showing through your work.

Lame Flake is a Tamiya PS spray paint that gives a lot of nice metal flakes. You back it with a solid colour of your choice although it does say to back with black. As you can see it gives a nice effect when backed with blue and I've had nice results backing with red (see the S15 shell a few pics down).

Noticed on the re-re upright where the grooves are filled in. You can still see the marks where you can actually remove some plastic if you would like it to look like the exact original part.. It will be hard to groove them though.. I guess they filled that part to make it more durable? IMG_3821-1.jpg

Cool comparison thread!

i noticed a part that seems different in the centre diff..the new aluminium pressure plate uses a rounded slot to drive the rear prop joint.the original Avante and im sure the 2001, Egress and Vanquish used a splined hole.kinda like the TT01/DF02 out drives compared to TA01/02 ones.

the rear prop joint itself is different to accomodate the change.

Also i was meaning to ask,are the gearboxes and such made from glass filled/reinforced/other? type plastics? they look like they are in the photos..alot like Kyosho parts that have that gritty quality/feel to them.?

thanks for the thread!

added....Rosey..i think the tiny cap screw is a kinda of "bump stop" for the steering knuckle/upright

This change was actually made with the second batch back in late 88/early 89 and not on the new 2011. My original Avante uses two locking nuts on all four upper control arms. Also the lengths of the arms are different, so there was considerable suspension setting alteration with the updated kit back then. Tamiya had switched to beefier front alloy uprights, and king-pin style screws to bolt the rear uprights to the lower control arms.

Why did they change two of my fave stickers? "Bel-Ray" and "Spacetech Engineering"?

Great thread by the way!

I feel the same way.

Is there anyone willing to do reproduction sets of these stickers? Not the whole decal sheet?
