Hello, my name is adam.

I have recently purchased a rising storm which has been built.

It is now fully balanced. Body shell is mid paint job.

I know the df 02 platform seems to be deemed inferior to the df 03 but to me it seemed a better re entry point and enough of a challenge for my first build.

Anyway, I am running it stock. With the plan being a gradual replacement of hop ups as the months go by. I am now in the market for a quality battery and charger to replace the basic setup that came with the kit. I want to increase the runtime which shouldn't be too hard as my current battery is a 1900 lab nicad.

I like the look of the team Orion iq605 lipo charger and their packs.

Can I run lipo on my stock buggy?

Any information would be a help but be gentle with me as I'm trying to absorb a lot of info.

My main thinking is if I'm making the investment I may as well future proof it as much as possible.

Look forward to your replies. Adam

if you're in the habit of running until the battery is flat, you'll be needing an ESC with LiPO low-voltage-Cutoff (LVC)

or addon an external LVC gadget to your non-LVC ESC. This stops the drain before your lipo is damaged from overdischarge.

Nice charger is neat; not really necessary to buy brandname lipo packs for just mucking about imho.

There's many yumcha china packs that will do the job fine, get ones in hard case

that will fit into the stickpack hole for convenience. eg yeahRacing etc

I can get a good 30 minutes run time on grass/damp mud in my son's rising storm with a 5000mAh Vapextech NiMH pack - good enough for most people, no need for new ESCs, chargers or the (relative) hassle of lipo packs.

For bashing this is plenty of time - 30 minutes in this weatehr and my 8yr old is too cold to want to carry on longer :D

Yeh like said before you will need an external low voltage cut-off or alarm, the alarms can be found on ebay for as little money, i also use hobbywing's lipo protector aswell from ebay or i got mine from hobbyking.

Lipo batteries are cheaper, lighter and much easier to maintain compared to aging nimh's and nicad, i took some convincing myself, but i wouldn't go back now.

i use turnigy lipo's in the 30-40c rate, i have some 2200mah ones for my stock stuff and scalers and there great and last ages and 5200mah ones for my brushless stuff, really good batteries for there price.

Adam,

welcome to the forum!

I think you have already been well advised on the batteries, so let me go slightly off topic: I'm not 100% familiar with the DF02 chassis, but it seems like the Rising Storm is only partly fitted with ball bearings. The manual mentions 8 pcs of 1150 nylon bearings, which I strongly suggest you replace by proper ball bearings. Identical to those already part of the kit. This will provide a bit more speed and a small improvement in run time. The 1150 bearings are widely available at reasonable prices. If you get 10 pcs, you have a few spares.

Thanks for your advice. I forgot to mention that I fully ballraced the chassis while I built it.

By the time I finish work the paint should be fully cured and ready for stickers. I'll post pics once its sorted. Not that a stock car is much to shout about. I'm still proud of my work.

Having painted and decalled son's shell at the weekend make sure you have a beer handy. The first two decals to go on aren't the easiest to align at all - as a rough guide there is a slight kink approx half way along the decal to coincide with the 'air intake' at the rear of the side window.

Welcome to the forum Adam.. don't worry about making your car uber, if you love it and have fun with it, that's all that matters!

Stickers on. I've kept it pretty minimal. Didn't really like the stickers too much.

Colour scheme is as box with red and white. Full sticker has a purple and yellow flame but I can't see why yellow purple and red should feature together.

I cut a few of the stickers up and I like it. Photos to follow.

...still waiting... :-)
