I purchased a Hotshot re release kit and along with it I purchased a 13T 32 dp Ansmann' s Steel Pinion Gear. I was just wondering how to achieve perfect gear mesh or is this pretty much already done for you on the hotshot due to non adjustment? I read in Radio Control's Tips and Tricks that to get perfect gear mesh a trick that you can do is to put a strip of paper between the gears as you mesh them together. When the mesh is tight, rotate the gear to remove the paper, and the gear mesh will be perfect. Has anyone tried this?

Hotshot does have adjustment for different sized pinions, achieved by moving the small metal plates at one of the motor mounting screws. It's described in the manual. There is no other adjustment.

The paper method described is the correct method for models that have a slotted motor mount with infinite adjustment. On most Tamiyas it's idiot proofed with set positions for each tooth count either by using the correct set of holes or setting the notched plate (like on the Hotshot/Fox).

Just a question since I don't know, is the 32P pinion the correct one for a Hotshot? My vintage collection is running silver cans so I just use the kit pinion, but I've been told the vintage Tamiya's use mod-0.6.

Have to agree with everyone else about the paper method for setting gear mesh. If you don't know how there are videos on YouTube. After a while and enough practice you can start setting it by feel.

I had the same question also, and was told that the Hotshot does use the 32dp. You can look at my post "Help with a brushless setup for hotshot" in the all things electric forum. Maybe this will help. I orderd a 13T 32dp ansmann steel pinion gear for mine.
