Hello there,

I've got a few Tamiya kits I've just got back after around 15 years since I gave them to a friend for his boys to play with but they've outgrown/broken them.

They were in perfect condition when they got them but are in various states of repair now.

I don't suppose many on here have heard of these kits but they were:

58058 Blackfoot

58087 Manta Ray

58215 PIAA Porsche 911 GT2

As far as I can tell the Blackfoot needs a new pinion gear on the motor to get it going again as well as repairs to the body work.

The Manta Ray needs shocks, uprights and a motor mount.

The Porsche is in perfect condition apart from the fact they can't find the body shell.

Is it realistic to think I can find these bits for such old models or should I just sell them for bits?

Welcome to to the club.

Yes they are vintage. Do them up! You will get so much fun out of them (Your wallet won't though). Parts are pretty easy to find aswell.

Yes, it is very realistic to find the bits. They are vintage but they are also very popular models.

You shouldn't have too many problems repairing those cars as parts will be plentiful on eBay and from many other sellers, lots of whom are members on here.

The Manta Ray in particular will be easy as it was rereleased in 2005. The Manta Ray is essentially a TA01 buggy so lots of TA01 parts will fit including the motor mount. Lots of aftermarket companies are making parts for it, the motor mount I'd advise an alloy one. The shocks don't have to be original and lots of other buggy's shocks will fit it.

There's also a little bit of information on the main site about compatibility between models. For example the Blackfoot shares it's pinion with the Monster Beetle, Mud Blaster and Bush Devil so if you can't find a Blackfoot pinion, one of the others will do.

Blackfoot parts

Manta Ray parts

Original Blackfoot bodies do come up on eBay but very seldom and very pricey so repairing your one would be the best option.

P.S. I know jack about the Porsche!

Thanks guys,

I wasn't expecting such a quick response. That parts reference is really handy, and I've managed to find the pinion for the Blackfoot on ebay. I think I'll get some aftermarket shocks for the Manta Ray, the motor mount from another car with the same chassis might be easiest as I'm not too confident an alloy one will fit, they don't seem to have as many holes as the original. The uprights don't seem to be anywhere though, I'll keep looking and they might turn up at some point.

The one thing I can't seem to find is a new body for the Porsche, are there any others that will fit?

You'd be amazed what people on here have heard of, and believe me, those are far from obscure

The TA01 uprights will fit the Manta Ray, have another look on eBay, there's currently 3 listings but the blue ones won't fit, you'll want the red or black ones.

I just had a look at the Porsche on the main site. What a nice looking model, shame an original shell can't be found. There will however be other shells that fit it, you'll just need to know what the wheelbase of a TA03RS chassis is. I don't know as I don't know much about touring cars but hopefully another member reading this will know.... anyone?

Thanks for the advice on the uprights I was just looking for Manta Ray specific ones and couldn't find any.

I would really like to do the Porsche up to look original, so all I need is the shell, but it seems that it is quite rare, a search in google didn't find one at any rate. I'll keep looking though.

The chassis is a short wheelbase version whatever that is, I'll get the measuring tape out and see what size it is.

Here's the current collection in it's sorry state:

The Manta Ray

And a collection of random bits

I've got my work cut out but I think I should be able to get everything working and looking good again,

I think the Porsche body shell will be the most difficult bit to find.

You're right, 95% of the parts were no problem, but finding a body shell for the ta03rs chassis is a bit of a pain. I'll try a wanted ad in here and see if anyone has anything that would do.

I actually have a extra 911 Porsche body, just the lexan part, but i'm not sure if i want to part with it.

there is a manta ray body set on the bay right now. don't worry about the broken steering carriers you can get new ones made of aluminum off the BAY really easy, they are awesome,

plus you can get the maker to anodize them in red and match what you had.

the blackfoot looks pretty good some minor plastic repair a repaint and some Repo decals should bring it back.

Thanks Dan,

I got contacted by someone on here that found the correct shell stocked in a German model shop and I've managed to order one. £40 quid! But at least it's the right bit and I can return it to original.

The Manta Ray body is actually OK, it doesn't have any cracks or anything, I just need to find a way of getting what looks like hammerite off the thing!

Kamtec do a repro lexan body for the Manta Ray for £12-13 from recollection - might be easier than trying to strip paint with £10 worth of brake fluid !

I've found out that the Taisan Porsche GT2 uses the same body shell as the PIAA GT2 and I like the look of it better, so I'm going to do my one up to be a Taisan. I'm not sure if the rear wing is the same or not, but it should be close enough. I may need to take the spacers out and fit shorter shafts to the rear to be able to fit the Taisan wheels but it shouldn't be too difficult.

I got my new pinion gear for my Blackfoot yesterday so I poped it in and it all seems to work, so I just need to tart up the body a bit now.

Still looking for bits for the Manta Ray but I'm optomistic.

Does anyone know the part number for the stub axles for the TA03 chassis? I'm going to fit standard ones to the back of my PIAA Porsche so that I can fit staggered wheels like the Tiasan. I looked at the reference bit on here but it doesn't list the parts for any of the TA03 models.

40 pounds for a PIAA shell is about a third of what it's worth, i'd be thinking VERY hard before you paint it up as a taisan!

If you can find one, the re-released GT2 body set included both the PIAA and Taisan wings and decal sets FYI.

I'm not concerned about what it's worth, I want to be able to use the thing. I can see the appeal of collecting models and making them like new, but I prefer to get use out of them. I've ordered some staggered fitment wheels, I just need normal rear axles now.

I've already ordered the shell from Modellbau (I think that's how to spell it).

:) "Modellbau" is the generic name for a 'Model Building Store' (my translation) in German... refers to a type of store rather than a specific store. Nevertheless, I got exactly what you meant!

Yep, that's the correct body... will be interested to see if it comes with the "body parts" - mirrors, wing and decals.

Referring to redzone's post above... hope nobody is paying $120 for them! :)
