Fellow Tamiya nuts, does anyone know of a paint which might closely approximate the color and brilliance of the gold "plating" which was applied to the Monster Beetle's wheels? I have found out the hard way that the "plating" does not stand up to DOT 3 brake fluid. Waaay back in 1989 when I bought my Monster Beetle, I painted over the gold "plating" with Pactra chrome model paint. Now that I am restoring the ride, well, you guessed it....Thanks!

I tried some of the paint that is supposed to be chrome finish. It was made by "Motip" so should be good stuff. It was useless, came out just like silver Tamiya paint, not chrome at all. Although it says on the tin that the final colour does'nt resemble the example on the lid.

Was quite expensive too.

Bibbo, thanks for your reply! Seems I might have answered my own question... Web searching yielded a company located here in the States that specializes in chroming and gold plating plastic parts for model enthusiasts, ChromeTech USA, their address is www.chrometechusa.com. Once I get these wheels stripped and replated by these folks, I'll let everyone know how they came out.

Yes the chrome paint is pretty cool stuff. I have bought some Tamiya Clear yellow to try and paint it over the alclad chrome. I just havn'e had a chance to do it yet.

I think the only real way you will be happy is by buying a new set of the Monster beetle wheels. You can pick them up on Ebay for about $30 a set. A while back I bought 12 sets from a hobby shop. I sold most of them on Ebay. I only have one set left now and I want to keep them just in case I ever want to put stock wheels on my Monster Beetle

Alclad is wonderful stuff. Many aircraft modelers us this century series fighters... Great stuff. SNJ metal and bare metal foil works wonders too. Just as an example on the Alclad.
