I will be racing a 540 stock silver can motor at the next vintage meet. (Dooooh)

Was going through my Grave yard of motors that i throw in when i buy a new tamiya kit and noticed their are a few different versions.. Is there a differance in output with a dull silver can and the bright chrome look can.

Before i dig out my Tekin Dyno soon, does anyone have any info of the variations . ????

Thanks

shhh... dun tell anyone but pick out the ones with 4 small vents (vs 2 large vents) and imprinted "62200"

stash them away in a velvet bag and don't let them see light again until the next full moon,

when you are capable of bolting them into your race steed under the silvery lunar illumination

 540 is a dark Art i tells ye

There is a page for most of the Tamiya motors here.

At the moment Tamiya uses Mabushi (shiny) silver cans in their kits.

The Johnson (dull) silver can is offered as an option part OP.689 (53689) 540-J Motor.

The site has some of the stats for the two cans but what the real life performance is questionable.

Not as good as i would like.

It's a Tekin Dynoi but it does have a load setting and digital revs, which is important. A constant 12v 15 amp power supply .

So i should at least get a idea of whats better or not.

Nothing beats track testing.

When this news filtered around our club (stock Tamiya Minis) everyone went out and grabbed as many as they could find - bit of a shame really as they are old now and hard to find and IMO its not really fair (although I used one just to keep up with everyone else!)

We have now switched to Sport Tuneds which has opened a whole new can of worms!

What can of worms have you opened with the Sport Tuneds out of interest?

For what it's worth, I think that the HPI Saturn motors make a great spec motor. Easy availability in the UK, labelled so you can't cheat, very reasonable price, last ages.

On our little track its dramatically increased tyre wear and some of the "lesser skilled" are crashing more. So now some are questioning whether it was a wise move or not.

I think a switch to the HPI Saturn 27 would be a good move. Labelled, slower, cheaper and more easily available than the Sport Tuned. Basically equivalent to a Tamiya kit motor but no opportunity to put something faster in (4-slots, 20-turns, polished sport Tuneds, vacuum cleaner motors etc.).

Out of my grave Yard i dug out 15 silver cans.

10 are Mabuchi and 5 Johsons. There seems to be different J cans as well i have 3 with four vent holes around the can the other 2 have just 2 large vents on the can.

All have four small vent holes in the can.

I hope to start dyno session within the next couple days.

never new there was such a differance in cans, end bells.

The vent holes you are interested in are the ones around the can - not on the end. 4 small holes means +++ speed compared to the ones with 2 big holes.

This accounts for why the standard 540 motors on my Clod were so quick, they are both 4 vent Johnsons, I'll put them aside for something else then.
