Should Tamiya metallic paints, PS-15, 16, 17 etc, be backed with any other paint?

I prefer the inside of a shell to be black, but is there anything needed 'in between'?

I tend to mostly back them with white, coz my white stripe causes it (see attached) I also use this scheme on my Nitro cars without any trouble. If you want to back it in black, I would go white first to keep the colours bright and popping.

Backing them with white ensures the brightest metallic finish, back with black and they will look slightly duller. All depends how thick a coat of metallic you have to start with i guess.

Thanks chaps

It was the translucency that I was concerned about - are the metallics 'solid' colours or more like tints?

Never have this trouble with black and yella :)

Yup, backing with silver is always a good idea, especially for metallics. I've even backed some with chrome paint. It is translucent so the backing color plays a big role in the end result. Back with white for brighter end result, and black for duller.
