Hi

About five years ago I bought the Super Champ in the picture and basicallyt stripped it and it has been sitting ever since. I haven't started this project because I have been super busy over the past few years. I pulled it out today and remembered that it had some cool hop-ups that I am thinking of re-installing in it. It came with these nylon front suspension arms that are picutured along with a very lightly lightly used Thorp Dirt Burner (currently covered in oil).

Before I go ahead I would like to know what company made these arms? Should I actually use them? I would also like to know more about the little plastic black ball joint cups that are inserted into the ends of the arms? They look ok but I want to know if you can get replacements? I can't believe that a little black O ring is all that holds them into place?

Thanks

OSR

Nice car and resto (mine is waiting for a good body to be finished....).

Anyway, nylon arms were made by RCH and MIP (not 100% sure about MIP). YES use them they works wonder! Seems incredible but the small black ball end cups are inserted at the end of the arms and with the o-ring holds everything together, spares sometime appears on the "Bay", not a cheap buy.......

To better hold the arms you have to "fix" them using small tie straps through the holes they have on them.

Not much, but this is what i know since i have them on 3 of my SRBs.......

Hope this help.

WWD,

Do yo have a picture of the small tie straps attached to you front arms? I would love to see a pic. I saw a pic of one of Shodogs SRB buggies. It looked like it had a metal ball race installed where the plastic ones would go??? Who made these?

On closer inspection tonight one of the lower nylon arms is starting to form a very small small hairline crack where the shaft runs through it. Any ideas of where I might be able to source a good used one for a replacement? I wouldn't want to run it just incase it split and I didn't have a replacement?

I am also wondering about that Thorp rear diff. I was thinking maybe I should just buy one from eBay and keep this one? Or maybe eBay it??? Or should I run it? Has anyone done a comparison between the Thorp and the Tamiya diffs that are all over eBay?

Here below an old picture of one of my SRBs (Super Champ) before resto but you can see the front arms with tie straps. Probably shodog it's the biggest expert about these parts and will be able to give you more precise information.

About the front arm that is cracked if you want to find a spare you have to start looking on the "Bay" waiting for someone that sell some or ask here on TC, i don't know any other way to find them.

I think that a good clean and some new ball diff grease will do the job with your nice Thorp diff, you can decide to replace the balls if they are worn but not much more is needed. I never saw a comparison between the vintage Thorpe and the new Tamiya Ball diff, what i remember of the vintage one is that it came loose very easily and it needed frequent adjustments. The solution was to slightly bend the diff screw, if i remember correctly, but i can be wrong so it's better to wait some expert (shodog again....?) advice on this.

Sorry to jump in in this thread, but WWD do you have any more pictures of your Super Champ, I would like to see the upper mount for the longer rear shocks.

I did have a look to see if it was in your showroom - but not.

Thanks

I think the diff screw is already bent from the factory isn't it? Are you saying that I should bend it more? Does anyone know with proper servicing how long these Throp Diffs will last?

I don't think you should bend it more if already bent i'd try to clean and service it and test it like it is now. I think that considering that you should not run it a lot it should last a lot.

BTW Thanks WWD for the reference photos! Much appreciated!

You are welcome! :(

Not hijacking (I hope) hopefully helping to illustrate...

The O rings are they readily sourced today? Is there a good replacement, does anyone know how stiff the rubber was?

O-rings can be easily (i think) found, i have some of them and i'll take the correct size for you. Anyway in the past when i was after them i used standard tamiya shocks O-rings and they seems to do the job.

I'm back with some info as promised.

In the picture below the comparison between the original 3mm shocks O-rings (organge one) and the RCH ones for ball cups (Black one), measures as follow:

Tamiya Shocks O-ring (3mm):

Total Diameter: 6,5mm

Internal Diameter: 3mm

Height: 2mm

RCH O-ring:

Total Diameter: 7mm

Internal Diameter: 4mm

Height: 2mm

I think that with a little search should be easy to find some rubber O-rings similar to RCH ones.

Hope this help

Thanks for all the info! Good to know that they last. I am planning on sealing up the gear case nice and tight with some type of glue or sealant of some sort to keep the water and dust out.

Perfect, picked some 4mm inside dia, 2mm thick black o rings up off eBay.

Thanks for the help

FWIW I ended up using 3mm inside dia, 2mm thick. These worked better than the 4mm ID. Thx again
