EddScott 134 Posted March 30, 2011 Great guide there! I want to do an Egress after I've finished my Optima. Was planning on using a Avante 2001 - although have made a low offer on a Vanquish recently. I've got an Avante 2011 but haven't decided if I want to build it yet I've asked Fibre-Lyte in the UK if they can make a copy of the Avante 2001 chassis and top deck out of carbon fibre and they said it shouldn't be a problem. Might be cheaper than OE parts off ebay. I noticed on a lads restoration website about those little mounts for the front shocks being reproduced. I've recently got hold of a Radio Race Car International circa 1988 (first one I bought) which reviewed the Egress and painted the body this awesome green colour. I've emailed them for the colour but no one knows what it is.

Wez-li 1790 Posted March 31, 2011 Very informative write up!
Thommo 1242 Posted March 31, 2011 Thanks for the great write up TD, well done. I have just started my Egress build after a full strip and waiting for parts. I am now very confident that my bin find is a genuine Egress thanks to your thread. I would love to know what POSI type universals look like as the bin find does have universal joint driveshafts front and rear? Also my shock springs are an odd yellow/brown colour. I thought it was rust at first but cleaning didn't change them. Can you shed any light this? Thanks again.
Thommo 1242 Posted March 31, 2011 I hope these images are OK. I'm new to this and still working it out. My driveshafts are standard universal and they will definately get the AW grease plus heat shrink treatment, another great tip TD.
pikachoo-75 3 Posted March 31, 2011 Just a quick question with regards to the Egress,do you think it would be easy enough to fabricate the front LOWER damper mounts? i feel a copy would be in order as original parts are rare and seems a shame to potentialy waste them. the reason i ask is with the 2011 Avante avail,it would be nice to fit a more upright front shock set up ala Egress. for running it would seem logical that the Egress has the better suspension overall? bit more travel/useable travel? mongoose1983 3357 Posted April 1, 2011 The Egress is such a nice late 80's buggy! Thanks for this information and specs, TamiyaDan. Awesome job!
djmcnz 755 Posted April 1, 2011 Right so we can agree now then then that the wire needs to be both round and Gold in colour to be official, anything else would be from a separate hi-cap damper set. There you have it folks, sorted haha Well you can't get gold and square so the criteria is simply: must be gold.
djmcnz 755 Posted April 1, 2011 Interesting timed thread actually since some dodgy dude is trying to flog a built clone on eBay for $1,700 and it has an FRP chassis! I asked a question of him and he said "oh yeah, I forgot about that" and hasn't updated the auction. He signs off the auction by saying "you wont be disappointed"! lol Seller, if you're a member here, do us all a favour and go play on the highway.
djmcnz 755 Posted April 1, 2011 Yeah, I don't mind what people sell, as long as they're honest about it and that auction is just not honest. You're also right, you could buy one of the 4 currently available on eBay or 6 currently available in Japan NIB for that price...
djmcnz 755 Posted April 1, 2011 I spent around 900$ all together to restore the one in my collection. I intentionally decided not to buy a NIB which would of been cheaper because I would of Never built it, and i wanted a built example. I have a runner body which is Extremely nice and original and runner hybrid tires, original box and manual with original spare parts and blister packs that were not used, it was a well taken care of survivor car but it still had its share of broken plastic and hardware.I prefer Survivor cars, or to restore really bashed up cars, because they give me the opportunity to drive them, i bought a lot of NIB kits over the years and while its cool to open the box, its sucks knowing you will never build them due to the values. right now the prices are crazy if you want an egress on a budget wait for this nightmare to blow over. I did the same, for the same reasons and for about the same price lol. And the $900 was on top of the original cost the vehicle... I assume you mean the same. djmcnz 755 Posted April 1, 2011 for me the 900$ was the original purchase price + the restoration parts. It is what it is you lose either way LOL! I waited for a long time to find the right car from the right person, and made a combo deal because he was hard up for money. I still had to tear the car apart and rebuild it from scratch. for my Vanquish conversion to sort of a avante 2001 i've spent WAY more Yeah I got a bit ripped off on my "restored, my shelf queen, could do with a clean" donor chassis and paid too much for what I got. That's a double blow of course because it also means you have more parts to buy. The gold springs were the hardest thing for me to find, ironically I found the correct front shock stay two days after I got the car and for $7 NIP...
