Hey all

Does anyone know of any way of improving the backend of solid rear axle buggies, they just want to flip up all the time?

Do you need soft springs or hard springs?

What oil should i use?

I meen for GH chassis and Dt01 chassis.

Cheers

Dan

soft springs, add weight to rear of chassis (not the gearbox, the actuall chassis)

but at the end of the day the solid axel cars are not going to handle that well.

Best way to improve the performance of solid axle buggies - click here: http://www.tamiyausa.com/product/item.php?product-id=42167

 Yeah, that'd work!

The DT01 rear axle handles differently to the GH/Hornet rear axle. The difference is the angle of the rear dampers. The DT01 has almost level dampers which because of that angle have very little resistance to stop the diff rolling left to right. I've told you how to improve it already, in multiple threads and in PM.

Also remember saying that you can't make a silk purse from a pig's ear...

Yer, I have fitted soft springs all round and it doesnt roll as much now.

However what should i use for weight in the chassis?

The main prob is that i have a 7 cell strapped onto the middle of the chassis and thats helped the understeer, butnow the backend seems to bounce all the time!

Also i i can re-position the rear damper, wll that help?

Thanks

P.S i know its a **** buggy, but its great fun and i have nitro cars for speed, this i just fun and learning!

Hey

This is what i have done, with alot of TA Marks, Percymon's and Nigel's help!

I havnt tested it yet, but it lookes much better and feels better aswell!

I just need to get some new oild for the rear shocks.

Comments and ideas welcome.

As per my PM, get some more mecanno and extend that bracket further rearwards (by maybe an inch) and get the shocks more upright - no doubt requiring much shorter shocks !

ooh ok, even more it is then!

Hears my mock up, made with macano pieces. Not sure how to do it finely though as i dont have any cutting material or shaping equipment. What do you think i should do?

Looks pretty good to me - just need to have a brace across the chassis at the upper shock mounts now. Use some threaded bar right across the chassis and double nut either side of the mecano to lock in place.

I think its finished....am i right in thinking it looks ok?

Its very strong with that strut that i made out of a 1/8 truck turnbuckle.

It feels much more independant now, just by pushing up one wheel, but now it may need a sway bar as i can see that one wheel can easily pop up when driving hard!

Let me know how it looks.

Well you've managed to get the rear shocks less horizontal which was the aim and the shock towers are braced which will help rigidity. A piece of threaded bar would have been an easier and possibly more rigissolution than the turnbuckle but see how it goes now. Should be better foundation for playing again with shock length, oil weight and springs .

Nice job with the Meccano.

Thanks, might spray it up in matt black to make it less obviouslt macano!

It seems fairly rigid, but might still get some threaded stuts.

So, what mod next then??

Hey Dan..

Nice work on the chassis mods..

One silly question, where do you put your battery, in the slot through the chassis, or strapped on top of the chassis with the rubber bands??

One of the easiest ways to help stop a car from traction rolling (rolling over in a turn) is to lower its centre of gravity (COG).. The easiest way to lower the COG is to lower the car (reduce its ride height), or moving the heavier items closer to the ground within the chassis... Another way to stop traction rolling is to widen the vehicle, with the easiest way being to fit different wheels with a greater offset, in your case you could fit some buggy tyres to some (narrowed) 1/10 stadium truck wheels, something like this http://www.hpiracing.com/products/en/3061/

If you want to add weight to your car, try lead fishing sinkers.. Lead is quite soft, so is easily cut, and can be shaped (slightly) by hitting it with a hammer.. Do wear gloves when working with lead, and wash your hands thoroughly after use for good measure..

Cheers

Have replied in a PM.

I thnk adding weight in the old battery slot will help. Also wider front tyres like you said, maby some 4wd buggy ones then glue them on...might try that as ii have some spares.

If possible I would be looking at how I could get the battery in the chassis not on it to lower the COG.

If you could cut some of the chassis (without too much structural damage) to alow the battery to sit down the center it would be a help.

This may be a stupid idea as i'm not familiar with that chassis.

No, thats a great idea, but i cant seem to find a way to do that. Ill send a pic of how the batter actually sits tomoro.

Google DT01 and find some pics....see if you can find a way.

thanks

Looking at pics online it seems that there would be alot of chassis chopping to do that mod, probably too much.

I now know what the DT01 chassis is. A friend of mine has a mad bull, I'll have a look at it & see if I can think some ideas.

Dan,

you display a lot of enthusiasm - maybe you have deserved to move on to a better chassis? :-) You should be able find a new DT02 around 70EUR..

cheers

Yea, try telling my dad that!

I have a few nitro buggies that go well though.

Im lookinh forward to taking it out today with its new chassis mods...i have strenthened it more aand it looks much more perfessional.

Might get my dads dremel out later and see how i can widen the chassis to lower the 7 cell, or maby just go to 8 cell and say "what the badword"!

Any more suggestions?

Hey Dan,

How are the cells arranged in your 7 cell battery?? It may be easier to re-arrange the cells in your battery to allow it to fit into original battery slot, without modifying, and possibly weakening the chassis..

When I was younger, I used to run a 7 cell pack, but mine was just a regular 6 cell stick pack, with a seventh cell added in the main battery lead.. This allowed me to fit it to different cars without modifying them, and also allowed me to add the extra weight (seventh cell) where I liked, or could make it fit..

Just a thought

Cheers
