Evening all

As topic implies, I'm tinkering with my runner MB and looking to improve it a little. I know the KBF gearbox is a lot more robust but has different internals so I'm wondering if I can take the Thorp set up (full shooting match -gears, cups, dogbones and axles) out my MB gearbox, chuck it in a KBF gearbox and then bolt that on the MB chassis?

Anyone any ideas? If not I might just buy a KBF gearbox and see.

Cheers

I doubt whether that would work, because the KBF track is a fair bit wider than the MB one, so the dog bones wouldn't be long enough. Only thing I will say though is that the KBF gearbox is that much more robust than the original MB one (read bombproof), I wouldn't worry about trying to improve it. Just make sure you've got metal bearings in there and it'll be fine. I run mine with 2S LiPo and 8.5T brushless, and it's not broken yet. (you will need a wheelie bar with that set up tho B) )

I have both a 23 yr old Monster Beetle and a King Blackfoot. My kingfoot has a brushless 4400kv motor with a 60amp esc. Like Steelrat mentions the kingfoot gearbox is pretty **** strong.

Also, the Super Blackfoot is as close as you can get to a beetle but with improvements. I just got a superfoot and will put a beetle shell on it. You do have to add the rear body mounts from the beetle to fit the shell. The good thing is the you get a rugged gearbox on your beetle. The bad part is that you will have to deal with the fact that the rear shocks line up verticle on the super/kingfoots. In my opinion you should look for a superfoot roller on ebay for cheap. Plus the super blackfoot has the single body mount in the front just like the beetle and original blackfoot.

With a Thorpe transmission I really wouldn't worry about the gearbox housing itself. The problem with the aluminum side plates flexing is only apparent when the standard bevel gear diff is fitted. I'm guessing you've got a Thorpe dirt burner ball diff in there, trust me, it won't be any more durable even if you could get it to fit inside a king or super blackfoot gearbox case.

My mb with its Thorpe gearbox has been very durable. The only thing that needs keeping an eye on are the dog bone drive shafts, though they are actually better made than tamiyas king blackfoot ones.

Nice one chaps, think I'll stick with the MB gearbox and the Thorp transmission, least it's 100% MB then eh

Got the final parts in the post today as well, so the transformation can begin.

Sloooooowly :)
