Hi guys,

Need some help with regards to doing a restoration project for my mountaineer.... Having to stripped down the whole chassis,i found some wore out screws, rusty screws....you get the idea.... Question is, must i use back all the old screws or can i change them to modern hex screws? Would doing that hurt the value of the vintage?

Thanks,

I can only speak for myself, but to me the correct screws are important.

I think that goes for many of the vintage collectors focusing on shelfers.

I have the opposite opinion

I run my vintage collection so small upgrades like putting in an ESC instead of the MSC or changing the screws doesn't bother me.

Out of respect to those that do have to have everything correct, I save the original parts if it came with the thing. I remove them and put them aside while restoring so when my heirs sell the "toy car collection" (and this will be over my dead body) they can go after the collectors who want a fully restored and correct example.

I'm sure opinions will differ from one TCer to another, but even though I know stainless hex screws can be better than the originals, and the ESCs better than MSCs (something that's still arguable), I would go for everything original. It's not easy to achieve now that three decades have gone, but the more original, the better to me.

By the way, good luck with the restoration and don't forget to post some pictures of that truck!
