hello i have just got a lipo and WOW it made my lunch box way faster than my old battery pack!

anyway it is a soft case type, i know not ideal for an RC truck.

is it ok to add some extra electrical tape around the pack? also the ends are open, with no plastic wraping around them. would it be ok to cover the ends up with tape/ or do they need to be left open so the lipo can breath ect?

i dont want to set my luchbox on fire!

also the motor did seem very hot after its run.

i have got a new brushless type on order but i think i will be too fast?

it seemed about right with just the new battery upgrade it will be one crazy box!

thanks

Hi

I have got lipos in cases and these are sealed up. I have had them for nearly 2 years, and had no problems. The only hole is where the wires come out. I would say you would be ok to tape up the ends.

If your Li-Po starts to vent, it's too late! It's not just debris that can pierce soft packs, but it's also the shock of being in a car that can impact the pack and distort the cell causing an internal short. Very risky using soft 'plane' packs in a car, especially when the pack is not fully supported like in a Lunchbox. A hard landing from a jump can 'banana' a soft pack.

Once they short internally, the reaction is very quick. Venting is the least of your worries.

lipos don't have vents, they are a sealed foil bag... nothing needs to get in/out

you can wrap them in tape or extra shrinkwrapping or tinsheet (don't laugh, seen it done somewhere before).

An exoskeleton with foam padding between cell & hardcase would be the best.

they shouldn't get hot in use either so don't really have cooling requirements

I'm a huge Lipo convert, the convenience factor and performance far outweighs any potential issues - I try my best to spread the word that Lipos are actually just as safe as NiMh when looked after correctly.

I'm 100% behind Mark on this one though - soft-case Lipos have all the strength of an ice-cream wafer! Running one of these in a Lunchbox where it's only supported across the middle is very risky, there's definitely a high chance of it turning into a banana on a hard landing, electrical tape or no tape.

Save the soft-case for a touring car/buggy where it's fully enclosed by the chassis if you must run it, hard-case Yeah Racing Lipos are cheap enough for you not to take the risk.

Cheers,

Tim.
