I am just starting on a restoration of a 58044 Mitsubishi Pajero and need the decals. I had planned to get them from a seller on ebay but he has decided to stop Tamiya ones :), only other ones are printed on white vinyl but I want ones printed on clear. So does anyone know anyone doing repro decals?

Are you sure he's stopped making them, maybe he's on holiday and not relisted them - assume you are talking about Myles/ tamiyoman ???

I'd be gutted if he has stopped

There was a rumour going round here that they'd told Kamtec to stop producing repro bodies (rumour = no idea if it was true) so if that was true I guess the next step would be the decals - no idea how long intellectual rights or copyrights apply to stuff, but obviously if Tamiya did object to people using their brand name to sell what are, effectively, counterfeit goods, then they got a pretty strong case.

If their logo appears on a decals sheet, like this one, then I guess they have a case as it's still a current logo?

Here's the Kamtec 'rumour' http://www.tamiyaclub.com/forum/index.php?...l=kamtec++cease

I have just noticed that the quality repro decals appear to have dissappeared off the face of the earth so to speak. Does anyone know what is going on?? Are Tamiya club decals still available? Is Mr Tamiya upset?? A sad day if these guys have been shut down

There's been no word from any sellers as to why they're no longer selling them as far as I know although Biggus has a 'repro' thread running here; http://www.tamiyaclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=62461

TC decals are still available, http://www.tamiyaclub.com/parts_shop_repro.asp

Looking at finished ebay auctions for a lot of Tamiya repro decals though, it looks like they've been finished early as opposed to the auctions ending at a certain time, whereas Kyosho and Marui repros from the same sellers seem to be still running

From a Tamiya decal auction; This listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer available - I was looking last night, and at least 20 that I checked all had that on them.

Well Spotted....Doesn't look good! This is gonna be a disaster for all vintage projects...Please say it isn't so! I hope TC keep them going!

This is a very poor business decision by Tamiya if this is the case. The main appeal for vintage Tamiya collecting and restoring will be lost in my opinion if the opportunity is gone to bring a car, truck or buggy back to life with an original appearance..It can only affect new sales as well, parts from various sellers are needed majority of the time for restoring that old Scorcher, for example, they order new Scorcher P parts from JR-RC. They finally finish restoring the shell. Now comes the decals and they hit a brick wall. I ain't gonna put SS2010 decals on a 1979 shell. Like with anything Tamiya you are best on keeping these sellers aboveground than underground.

anyone tried contacting these sellers to see why they have stopped selling them?

To my knowledge, only one of the "repro sellers" has been contacted by Tamiya, but Tamiya knows of the other ones.

I'm surprised that the suppliers haven't moved quicker to clarify their position on this? The beauty of bootlegging is that suppliers always find a way around prohibition. As long as there is a market and they continue producing, then selling privately via TC or email shouldn't anoy Mr T. Should it?

I hope repro decals can still be arranged privately as I have projects to finish. We all do. <_<

Hopefully this decision bites Tamiya on the bum.

(For the enthusiasts, I hope it doesn't come to this)

Seems to me the only thing keeping the company going is sentiment.

Shut the main customer base down, and Tamiya shuts down too.

I hope they realise this.

Zackly - I doubt this is the last we'll ever see of repro decals - If Gucci, Rolex and Nike can't stop people copying their (in comparison) complicated products, then stopping people setting up print runs is going to be nigh on impossible.

Anyone jacking it in could easily make a few quid selling the artwork/print files anyway

Actually I'm surprised at how big and fast the reproduction market got and that tamiya, kyosho, and others did not crack down years ago.

for collectors this is a great thing, prices will go up.

the truth is this:

"reproduction without license is property theft."

you can whine all about the evils of copyrights, you can whine about high prices, you can whine about how its the end of times and i will never find those rare parts now to complete my favorite tamiya model.

the truth is put the blame on Tamiya, and kyosho, and yokomo and all the other companies that created a black market for parts and bodies and decals because they do not give 2 shakes about their customers.

put the blame on them for having near zero parts support and no long term back supply.

I really hope this is true and the reproduction market will dry up. You have no idea how arrogant a lot of the reproduction lexan body seller have gotten over the last 3 years.

I know a lot of the people involved and the funniest story was things getting so heating in the reproduction market that one Reproducer was going to sue another reproducer for reproducing from one of there reproduced

molds. ROFLMAO!!!! you can't make this stuff up.

Then you have the claim of property rights theft in the Decal reproduction market, where once decal re-printer got angry that another re-printer stole his reprint and was selling it for 2$ cheaper on ebay and he went nuts

and wrote a page long rant about how he was going to get even with this person in real life.

Such drama to defend illegality is fodder for the comedy of it all.

if this is the signal of the end, buy what you can now it won't last.

I should add this I've seen this same thing Play out in the REAL 1:1 car market involving reproduced sheet metal and soft parts.

I'm sure tamiya Inc. would be open to a fee based license system where each part would be officially licensed however the re-producer would of course have to upfront these costs and then pass them on to the customer. in this case the bodies currently on the market for 20$ would increase into the 50$ range i'm sure. while the increased cost would anger the customer it would make all parties involved happy in the long term

the reproduction parts would then be legally on the market and the customer would have the parts available for use and tamiya inc gets its share.

glad you could help them find some decals dan ! .. <_<

don't even joke about stuff like that. first off i'm out of this market and have nothing to do with the drama going on.

I log into these sites and read about it just like everyone else, people want to air laundry in public then its everyone's business.

If things play out just as they did in the real car market then you will be surprised that quality will actually go up.

My two cents I personally don't give a hoot about in-fighting between sellers. Copyright theft or not I want that Bruiser shell I purchased 25 years ago to look good again be it Tamiya or whoever releasing decals for them!

The unfortunate thing now (for him anyway) is he's the sole seller of Tamiya repro decals on eBay UK (60 odd different sheets I think) - so it's made him Tamiya Enemy #2

So paying the same price as a genuine Tamiya polycarbonate shell, for a nearly as good reproduction shell, that was previously $20 is going to make me, the consumer, happy?

I say, if Tamiya dont want to make the product anymore, then free for all.
