Ok, silly thread after all the doom and gloom on here, but in the past week or so I've been outbid on the following (used) items....

TL-01 Escort WRC

Set of DF-03 wheels

Gravel Hound rtr

Brushless TC3 chassis

Manta Ray Spares

Taisan Porsche GT2

TT01 F430 rtr

Top force evo wheels

Probably for the best, but I am getting slightly annoyed lol

Anyone else been outbid recently? :)

Exactly!

Maybe your valuation of the items is slightly off the mark, i'd love an item for half of what its current value is, as would we all! Perhaps you should relinquish a few more of those pennies tucked up in your moth filled wallet!! ;)

Lol, I am kinda tight by nature!

I heard a good quote the other day.

"If I don't get it, it means that someone else paid too much for it" :)

I don't think I paid to much for the 911 I out bid you on lol.

It does happen a lot to me to. I will bid on most things that I am interested in if there cheap enough.

I just trow a bid in that I would be happy to pay within a few seconds from the end. If I don't win it I'm not to bothered. I refuse to get into a bidding war nowadays unless it's something I really want. I have paid over the odds for items before now, when my heart is pounding as the seconds count down with only on thought on my mind " I am having this whatever the cost" then I win it and think yeah !! But the realisation kicks in and it's Arrh what have I just done.

Ha ha, well I think you paid £2 too much! :)

You're right though, bidding wars are ridiculous, I hardly ever get involved, I usually think of a price and stick to it.

But the red mist does comes down sometimes lol

Well I wasn't really interested in th blue shell or the radio gear so I put that back on the bay so I'm sure I'll get £2 back lol

Another one is,

"When you win something on eBay, you have been willing to pay more for it than anybody else in the world."

Only if it's listed correctly and being watched by potential buyers... There are still a few bargains to be had :)

Currently being outbid/amazed on a non-functioning toy RC car I (and apparently someone else) want for the body...currently up to $65 USD. It has become a bit rare, but still...

What has amazed me lately is how the low the final price has been for stuff I have been watching. I've noted the current bid for the item with a couple of days to go and thought that there was no point in even bothering to put in a bid of my own because it would go way higher than that and beyond what I could afford. Lo and behold I go back to the auction when it has closed and the item sold for a similar price to what it was 2 days earlier.

A perfect example was this... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Tamiya-Vintage-Fast-...=item19c5da8473 ..a whole brand new FAV front end for the grand total of £3.20!

Who was the lucky person to nab that then?

oh it will be mine i'm sniping that auction to 500$

Muahhaahahahaha

j/k

I bowed out at $85...bought a mint working version of the toy for $66 last year. Was hoping for a deal on this busted one, but no dice. Like life, a lot to do with timing...

Dunno about bidding more than a BIN price, but what upsets me is having looked for ages for a part and not found it, going for the BIN option at a little more than I would have liked. No option as the part was needed, only for a couple of days later the item turns up in an action only to be won for half what I paid for it. <_<

Generally if I really want somethign in an auction I usually manage to win it.

I did lose something once that I have only seen one of on ebay in over ten years; a BKS pilots cap badge NIP, the airline my late father flew for in the 50s & 60s.

I do pretty well actually, considering how I bid.

I throw out tons of very low bids on items that my usual searches turn up. Sometimes I just prowl and that's when I find killer deals on misidentified or poorly described goodies and get a good price. Usually though I get outbid, which is fine because I don't really care. If I win for a low price I'm happy, but not crushed if it gets away to a higher bidder.

On things I really want, I bid the absolute max that I'm willing to pay and just forget about it. If/when I get an email that I won it, I'm well pleased, and again, since it was the absolute max price I'd pay anyway, I couldn't care less if it gets away to a higher bidder - the dude's obviously a nutter with too much money anyhow, right? <_<

That's what color the sky is in my world anyway.

Getting out bid doesnt bother me, I feel a little statisfied that I didnt get "bidding fever". What really bugs me is when I say "right this is my maximum bid and no further" and then the item eventually sells for just a few pence more... Or the times I've seen something I really want but assume its going to go way over my budget so I dont even bother to bid, and everyone else does the same so the item finally sells for silly money... <_<B):)

As someone who sells quite a lot recently, Im beinging to hate "ebay sniper" and think those programs should be banned. They are not in keeping with the way the market is intended to run and ultimately loose the seller (and ebay but who cares about them :P ) money. If someone wants to sit there and frantically place a bid in the last 10 seconds then thats fine buy me, but having software do it for you just doesnt seem to be playing fair in my mind.

Yep, the competition of Ebay. I've just been suckered into a bidding war and paid too much for the latest addition to my collection. But sometimes, you just can't lose that thing <_<.

Some good honest replies on this topic!

Well I finally managed to NOT get outbid yesterday, got a bargain too :)

I think it is important to realize two things about ebay:

1. just because you got "outbid" by a few pence doesn't mean the other guy's bid wasn't actually $50 higher - had you bid a few pence more, he would have still won, but he would have paid more.... If you are the guy who actually won, you know how frustrating it is to see the bid getting run to your max in the last 30 seconds. Sure, you still won, but it would have been nicer to win for $49 less if those other guys wouldn't have run the price up on you.

2. most auctions are for only 60 seconds - the previous week or so was really just a "viewing period" - but the real action takes place only in the last minute. A friend calls this 7 days of previewing and 1 minute of bidding. So if you are beating yourself up because you were "winning" (no Charlie Sheen pun intended actually) for a week or so until you got "outbid in the last 20 seconds" you are deluding yourself.

Leastwise, this is what I tell myself when some dogbreath sniped the Tamiya that I was winning until he snagged it out from beneath me in the last 3 seconds for .50 more.

I like the exitement. Especially to see if I make a steal :-) What I normally do is:

1) Ask the seller if he ships to my location (which is Denmark - normally I bid on German Ebay, and not all sellers ship to DK)

2) If I get yes, then - in acknowledgement - I immediately put in a bid of 50-60% my intended max (which I determine up front and stick with). This will help the seller not to see his article go for nothing.

3) Then, at the end of the auction (if I'm near my PC) I'll submit my maximum bid some 5-10 secs before auction end.
