One would assume that Tamiyas 1st car the Porsche 934 Turbo RSR would be the most collectable car. However i see it differently, as you guys all love ya sand scorchers and ya blazing blazers which were Tamiyas 24th and 29th. I know the first few cars arent as advanced, but i would have thought that maybe becuase the "made" tamiya that they would have been worth more. I no that theres personal and age factors involved and i totally respect this. I mean due to my personal factors and my age (19) i have a soft spot for the likes of Blackfoots and Monster Beetles.

I just want to hear your views on why some things are more collectable, and also i think your enjoy this, i put it to you to compile a list of your ten most collectable cars based on your personal reasons and preferences.

Mine are:

1.Mini Cooper Racing

2.Monster Beetle

3.Blackfoot

4.Grasshopper

5.Manta Ray

6.Lancia Delta HP Integrale (never be able to afford one)

7.Blitzer Beetle

8.Lunch Box

9.Hornet

10.Subaru Impreza WRC (theres so many types!)id="orange">

Of course i want the sand scorchers and King Cabs of the world, but this is just a list of what i would find collectable to me.

i shall enjoy reading your submissions and seeing what cars appear the most.id="red">

As one of the large band of 30somethings that frequent this forum, I may be able to help with the discrepency between the value of Car #1 and car #24...

Basically, although the 934 and 935 Porsches "made" Tamiya in terms of opening up the RC can of worms, it was the SS and Hilux, and then a few years later the Hornet and Frog which really took us kids of the 1980s. By the mid 80's RC was really popular, and there are so many more of us who had a car. In the late 70's there just simply were less people who owned or even saw them!

When I came back to the hobby recently, it was a desire to own either the cars I owned, or the ones I missed that drove my buying decisions. Car No.1 may be historical, but to be honest I had never seen one in '83, in fact I had never even heard of it.

Therefore it is the old rules of supply and demand - most of the collectors of old Tamiya are inspired by our first contact with the hobby, and most people got into the hobby when cars like the SS were released.

My Top 10 are:

1) Porsche 959 (still the coolest Tamiya of all if you ask me!)

2) Wild Willy (I will include both the WW1 and the WW2 here because I never owned a WW1 and therefore dont know the differences)

3) Rough Rider (although I had the SS it was actually the RR which I prefered)

4) Hilux (who can forget the picture of 24 of them pulling the real one)... but if i was going to spend $1000 on a car 3speed I would probably go for the mountaineer)

5) Fast Attack Vehicle (just very cool and realistic)

6) Avante (I had fallen out of the hobby by the time this was released so I dont have the emotional ties, but when I found this site and saw one I thought it was one of the greatest cars Tamiya have ever made)

7) Jeep Wrangler (just very cool, great chassis, and so realistic)

8) Hornet (all my mates had one so more emotional desire than a craving for what is in realkity an average chassis)

9) King Tiger 1 Full Option - a good friend is building one at the moment... awsome machine!!!)

10) Porsche Boxster... (crappy M02 chassis but I have a real one so...)

It all comes down to personal taste, and age is also involved... [;)] Collectable is purely your own taste, I hate it when people just follow the croud and buy SS for silly high prices... They all forget about the Frog, Blackfoot, HotShot, 959 which we just as important, if not MORE important to RC history. Even the Mini has it's significance, as well as the Striker.

Enough said. Below stats of what people bothered to put in their showrooms, which somewhat refelcts what is generally most desired around TC.

http://www.tamiyaclub.com/cars_stats.asp

I just cant pick my favorite of the cars I want, so I do so for the cars I own...

1. Mountaineer (will add it to TC in a minute! [;)] )

2. King Blackfoot

3. Blackfoot

4. Holiday Buggy

5. Martini Mk.22 Renault

6. Mini Cooper Racing

7. Fighter Buggy

8. Ferrari 360 Modena Challenge

9. HotShot (it's just not done yet...)

10. Sand Rover (also not done...)

This varies from day to day, it;'s more a random order. My favourte at the moment is definately the Mounty, but I am still so joyed I finally got it... [:D]

Hmm good idea about ratings. My top ten are as follows.

1. Holiday Buggy - My first tamiya - Great car

2. Sand Scorcher - Love that yellow/red scheme

3. Blitzer Beetle - Nice quiet smooth operator/fun to drive

4. Black Foot - First Tamiya Monster Truck and it just looks mean

5. Grasshopper I - For its simplicity and ruggedness

6. Subuaru Brat - I've always liked the Brat in 1:1 scale

7. King Cab - Whole lotta fun to drive, even though it has a lexan body

8. 1983 Vintage Pajero - Lots of detail and lots of detail

9. Isuzu Mu - Haven't driven it yet, but it looks like a winner

10. Hi-Lux - Yeah right, maybe when I win the lottery..... Its the only 3 Speed that looks appealing to me.id="blue">

Basically here's my list. I have had all of these at one point in my life with the exception of the Toyota Hi-Lux. Hopefully I'll have all of these in my collection

Let me think; diffecult.... The order sometimes differs a little but in general:

1. Sand Scorcher - the car I admired most as a kid

2. Hilux - same but way to expensive. It's promotional video was SO COOL !!

4. FAV - my first RC

5. Porsche 959 - best looking

6. Avante - coolest looking

7. Boomerang - my borther and me (each one) raced them against each other very often

8. B2B - had 40 NIB body sets at one time; raised my interest :))

9. Bruiser - very cool

10. Porsche 934 - 1st Tamiya HAS to be in here ;)

I'm quite fortunate to own 8 out of 10 from the above. Jippy !!!

I'm one of those 30 something crowds and had a SS as my very first car. However, I am also parcial to sports cars...here is my mix:

2. Holiday buggy - my 2nd R/C car, loved it

There are many MANY other cars, I could go on. Honorable mention, Porsche 934, just because...

Jeez Guys!!

I have to do it. Like everyone mine changes from time to time but at the moment its

Ferrari 312T3(#11)

Bruiser

Tyrell P34(#3)

F.A.V

Superchamp

Hilux

Wild Willy 1

porsche 959

Can Am Lola

Lambo contach

Some of these cars have remarkable detail or features. I find it hard to go past the formula one cars but the sheer brilliance of the 3 speeds I feel is hard to beat. I have heaps Mbs and i really don't like them that much. Not enough anyway to even have one in my personal collection..... Sorry.

I guess one persons opinion of collectability is different to anothers, I collect partly for the sentimental reasons and partly because I like the look of the car. I dont really do shelf queens with the exception of my MB, but thats really a sentimental reason aswell

1. Hornet, This was the first car at the time to have!

2. Falcon, Stepping up from the Hornet, race without always loosing.

3. Lunchbox, Moving from cars to trucks

4. Pumpkin, Got the brother have to have the sister

5. Monster Beetle, Red cars go faster, red trucks rock!

6. Boomerang, Moving to 4WD, always wanted one still not got one.

7. Hotshot, Don't know what it is about this car, just always wanted it, still waiting

8. Bigwig, Fast FWD something about the body that screamed style!

9. Avante, Nuff said.

10. Blitzer Beetle, Want a slightly newer "vintage" car that had some style.

Now I know that these are more standard than most and not really in the same league as the SS and BB but those cars never really bothered me, and apart from the money they fetch they still dont really hold any interest for me.

Just my 2 pennies/inane rambling[|)]

Posted

Heres my top 10

1. SS - First RC Car, all those years ago...

2. Wild Willy, the one I always wanted and never got as a kid

3 + 4. Cheetah + Original XR311. Again hours of watching the videos in Beatties wanting one...

5. Tyrrel P34 Six Wheeler, the only F1 type car I'd have in my collection.

All of the above hold very fond memories from childhood days and Beatties(LHS) in particular. Of those I'm missing two, both of which have been rereleased but I'm holding out for the originals [:)]

After that you are into the models that I've discoverd in recent years since I started collecting again...

6. Hilux 4x4

7. Bruiser

8. Mountineer

9. Avante

10. Porsche 959

All great models, that look like models rather than 'Toys'

Bubbling under the top 10 there are, TXT1, Terra Crusher, Top Force, Wild One and King Cab (my first restoration project and its still not done!) With the exception of the kingcab these are here because they are just so much fun to drive...

just thought of another 6 or so but gotta stop there, this is just too hard....

Posted

Though the Fighter Buggy will always be my first and most loved, there is still a list of cars I want, which I didn't add in my Top-10. I only added models I got there...

Sand Scorcher

Rough Rider

other 2 SRB's

all 3 speeds, mainly the Hi-lux and BB (I got a big wheel one..)

a Mounty with a Bruiser body.. [;)] [:P]

Tyrrell P34 6-wheeler (not the re-release)

B2B Racing Sidecar

Porsche 959

Celica Gr.B

and some more of Tamiya's wacky, revolutionary, and (in my taste) special cars (Avante and more...).

There is not really a particular order of wanting them, above cars are in random order. I don't really think it makes sense for me to order them. I know I can't pick anyway - so I won't. There are enough tough decisions in life... [;)] Also, I like the metal cars not just because I am following the croud (like TOO many of us...) These just look most appealing to me, I think because they are simply the most realistic models there are (which I am looking for in these cars). I can't really say they are from my childhood though, but I can't really correct that 'error'... [;)] I know the meaning of later plastic cars as well: these are just as important to RC history... I can't have missed that when I own a Fighter Buggy! Wait is this a repost...? [:o] LOL

Remember: Plastic is fantastic, metal is just heavy... [;)] Don't follow me or anyone else and get what you like, not what others like or what is 'worth' more. That's just total cr*p if you ask me... [:(] Oh well, their loss, not mine... [:)]

Posted

I am interested Sjoerd, in what evidence you have that people buy Sand Scorchers or any other car because you think they just want to be like other collectors and not because they really want/love them?

Just because people didn't grow up with them or have them before they realised loads of other people had them and collected does not mean they don't care for them any less?

Just wondered what you were basing your theory on because after all what you are suggesting about some people is not really very 'complimentary' about them.

Posted

Well i am in my 30's aswell, and funnily enough like Chris spent many a time staring at the videos that Beaties (nottingham) had and looking inside just dreaming of owning such fantasic revolutionary toys, well they were at the time[;)]

Top ten, aaggghhh can't i have top 50 !!!! LOL

I hate making decisions especially as hard as this, there are so many different types, e.g. 4wd , 2wd , Army, sports, F1, trucks etc....i find it near impossible to decide which i prefer as they appeal too me in totally different ways, just as they are used for various purposes.

Well here goes anyway.... in no particular order

1. Sand Scorcher ,RR, FR (running through puddles [:D])

2. Cheetah and XR311 (so cool army lookers)

3. Fast Attack Vehicle (same as above)

4. Wild willy M38 & Willy's Wheeler

5. Porsche 959 & Celica GRB

6. Lambourgini Countach

7. All Ferrari F1's

8. TR15T

9. Egress , Avante , Avante 2001

10.Trucks & Trailers (King Hauler a box semi trailer [;)])

11. TXT-1

12. Mini

13. Top Force and Evo

14. Dyna Storm and Blaster

15. 3 Speeds, hilux, blazer, mountaineer, bruiser

16. Tanks

Sorry i got carried away ,but there are Sooo many more i wanted to add aswell[:P] guess as i haven't all the rc's listed above means my collection will continue to grow[:0][8D]

Its great to see such a response. Also i can see alot of patterns emerging, it really is quit interesting. Also you reasons are quit varied.

Well for me it's got to be the following....

1) toyota hi-lux of briuser (i used to have one but i sold it!! [V] )

2) porsche 959 (I reckon Tamiya pulled out all the stops with this one)

3) wild one (My very 1st R/C car)

4) bigwig (interesting body designed by Takuya yura and the fact that is goes like....well make your own conclusions!!)

5 Hotshot (my first 4x4 R/C car)

6 FAV (havent owned a running one but like the look of it

7 sand scorcher (oh why oh why did i sell it [V] [V] )

8 subaru brat (same as above??)

9 holiday buggy (now ive got one to restore i will find out why other people love them!!!!)

10 supershot (I havent got one but on the lookout [8)] )

Posted

1) Supershot, had soooo much fun with it when I was 16 or so

2) Hotshot

3) Super-Hotshot, oh wait, that's not really a standard Tamiya. It is basically the *shot that I thought Tamiya should have made, so I did it myself: base is Hotshot with bearings, gold wheels, Hotshot tires(!), Supershot suspension, RX-540VZ, Hotshot body in metalic red, bottom guard, 8.4V battery clips.

4) Sand Scorcher

5) Sand Rover

6) Audi Quattro

7) Cheetah

8) Porsche 934

9) Mountaineer

10) Grasshopper

Don't know if I'd select the same order tomorrow, but that's it today

I'm on a quest to mend my silly ways and buy back all the cars that I foolishily sold in my youth.

My Favorites include (in order):

-Hornet I-my first, super cool looking and simple

-Hot Shot-my 2nd, Oh did this car kick *** in it's day

-Super Shot-I converted my Hot Shot but I'd like a separate one for

my collection (just bought one to restore)

-Audi Quattro-Beautiful Body, rolled all the time, bounced like

a basket ball, couldn't change the motor because the

pinion wouldn't come off but I loved it,

-Subaru Brat-My brother had one which I put together-liked the body

-Wild Willy I-never had one as a kid but I want one because----

-Wild Willy II-just got one at X-mas-hillarious, awesome tires and

and detail-Willy's great, that's why I want WWI also

-Ford F150 XLT-I just bought a used one for restoration-out of all the

SS,RR chassis cars, I like this one the most; I

figure it's a 'must-have' for a collector-I got a

nice Sand Scorcher body with all the chrome intact

these are the cars from my youth in the 80's. Now a days, I run a TAO4R on the touring circuit.

Sorry Theo, you are 100% right... I just try to make it look worse so it lowers value.. [:P] [:o)] [}:)] [xx(]

The SS WAS built for realism, not for simplicity... But as advanced cars came out, the SS was still avaliable, in that time it was really heavy '****' and a 'Super Hornet'... Sorry for the **** comparison I made. I kinda forgot it somewhere in my anger... But the whole point was:

The Sand Scorcher is overpraised for what it is.id="blue">

I might sound like your wife saying this, but at the end of the day the Sand Scorcher is just a toy! [:o] Let's think reasonable for one day and leave the SS for what it used to be... [|)] As said, no offense here, so no counter offence please before this is going nowhere... [:o]

My top ten is a bit of a mixture of old and new

1) Top Force

2) Lunchbox

3) Blitzer Beetle

4) Midnight Pumpkin

5) Nissan King Cab

6) Mud Blaster

7) Hornet

8) Lancia Delta

9) Dyna Storm

10) Schnitzer BMW M3 Sport

I also have a soft spot for the stadium trucks, dyna blaster, stadium blitzer and stadium thunder.

I'm 21 and most of the cars around when i was a kid were monster trucks and buggies. I do like the F150 Ranger and Blazing Blazer but the prices are way out of my league so i can only dream

Over priced SS? This is a debate that keeps coming up.

The real bottom line is, if something sells it is not over priced, over priced items don't sell. Simple as that. People want SS and are prepared to pay for them and that sets the price.

when you break any of the kits down into its component parts, you don't really get very much actual material for you money so its not physically what you get that drives the price (for any thing for that matter) It is what the whole package is worth to you.

You just cannot apply logic to collecting it an emotive thing not a rational one. Its just the same for any collectable item, what makes one painting worth £28 million and another £20.00 - its all just paint on a canvas, what makes some teddy bears worth £4000.00 and other worth £40.00. Collecting is about getting stuff you like and paying what you need and can afford to have it.

Also looking at how heavy they are or how they handle is not really what its about (for me anyway) very few of the early models would actually rate as great racers compaired to what you can buy today. If we wanted something light and fast we wouldn't be buying vintage cars.

I'm not denying that SS and Blazers etc fetch a lot of money, more than I can afford in most cases, but as long as they change hands at those prices I don't see how they can be classed as 'over priced'. That is the price they are worth to those people.

What people that simply say 'SS are overpriced' are really saying is 'I don't understand why people pay this amount' which is a different thing.

Its just a matter of taste and not really something that can be explained.

My ranking :

Sand scorcher

Hilux

fast attack

rough rider

wild one

wild willy 1

cheetah

blazer

sand rover

holiday buggy

The price payed for the cars are only the volonty of each one to get what they want to collect.

Talking about painting, how much for a spanish artpaint from Miro? for me the paintjob doesn t cost what people is going to pay for it, but the price is set by the market.

Without anyone of us looking for a sand scorcher (153 in tamiyaclub) do you really think a seller would be able to sell a sandy for more then 50 dollars.

A sand scorcher is for most of us a child dream, a well made RC car produced 20 years ago. Its part of electric offroad RC history!!!!

      Hi Jon,
In the linked image, I've simply moved the bar forward until it is centered directly over the rear shock tower (approx. 10.72mm) and kept the same height.  Is this what you had in mind?
