This is my wild one runner. It has modern radio gear, FAV bonnet, home made alloy roof, bearings, super stock RZ motor.

Its got a set of tarmac tyres on at the moment as thats where most of the running has taken place. I have set of mint stock wheels/tyres for the shelf & the original body work is also kept safe on the shelf.

I have used different springs on the rear stock dampers to soften it up a bit & improve the handling.

As you can see in the last pic the gearbox has taken to leaning to one side, I understand this is common & it happened to my old wild one back in the 80's.

Whats the best way to cure this problem?

Is that gearbox twist just from the motor hanging out and gravity taking its toll? Wow. I'd like to see the gear mesh on that (or maybe I wouldn't!).

Posted

Yeah, just gravity basicly. The gear mesh is fine as the whole gearbox is leaning over.

The only drive train algnment problem that could arrise is the the out drives to the drive shafts.

I think you are right, the mounts just need a bit of a tweek.

I have a complete frog gearbox but it seems a shame to do the swap when my wild one is running so nice. Still using the original out drives & hex shaped drive shafts!

Cool Wild One!

Not sure why the gearbox is leaning, I haven't noticed it on either of mine.

Driver looks scared, so would I if my mechanic had installed a RZ

Mate i had the same problem with the gearbox lean, turns out the alloy gearbox mount had broken , but was not able to see untill i removed it . I think the alloy version is much weaker as i have 2 broken ones but the metal fav mounts have had no problems, maybe change to the metal version. Not sure why there is a trend to replace the whole gearbox to a frog version as they are very similar internally, the weak link in both boxes is the diff bevel gears, lock the diff and they are very tough .

Posted

The alloy mount had bent slightly. I slackend off the front red mounts, bent the alloy mount back & tightened it all back up. Its all straight now & the diff runs smoother. I can see how a steel mount one would be better. A mount made from a block of alloy would also be an option.

Does the rere FAV have a steel mount?

I noticed while changing a broken rear suspension arm that the ones on the car are the very early kind with the round droop stop instead of the later oval one.

This meant that I had to replace both, I suppose they should always be replaced in pairs really.

Thanks. The RZ works great, I'm using a 15t pinion & the speed is probably as much as the wild one can handle. Acceleration is superb, if it finds grip it wheelies.

Driver has that look due to the ammount of times he's been over onto the roof :)

Snapped a brand new rear trailing arm on the first run. Just from cornering hard, the platic must have been so brittle.

Its a real pain as you have to buy a whole E parts tree just to get one right arm. Anyone know of a alternative?

yummy looking wild one , what are the rims ? i had a job trying to find a set of 2.2 rims for a marui hunter rwd buggy .. i finally bought a set of TRF201 rims ..

The E-Parts from the Re Release FAV are more elastic and reinforced on the inside. Jason (JR_RC) have

this one for sale on ebay. These are affordable.

Thanks. The rear rims are Ansmann & come with the tarmac tyres pre glued. The front rims are Kyosho Ultima & have Losi tyres.

Yes, the first release and the re release ones have steel rear arm holders, motor mount and front shock towers

The tamiya alloy is very soft, I can see how steel would be better for running.

i can sell you a wheely bar if you want one to stop the grinding of the roll cage on the ground :o

pm me back if your interested

i have the 18t pinion gear which is faster than the 15t pinion and it handles the speed fine :P

AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

can you tell me where you got you wheels and tires? :P:o

Thanks. The wheels came from ebay UK, same as the tyres. Try searching with the info I posted above.

I'm running a slightly slower motor now as the RZ was just too much for the short course I was racing on. I don't get the wheelies any more but I get around the track with far less crashing.

Going to have to run the WO again soon, tinkering with one of my 1.1 cars has taken up a lot of my time.
