I have an opportunity of a Associated SC10 RTR for good money, brand spanking new.

Its the Pro Comp version, so brushed 17T motor and FM radio set.

I have a spare EZRun 9T motor/ESC and spare 2.4GHz Rx so i can upgrade it very easily.

Whilst the obvious intro to the short course truck scene is a Traxxas Slash, is the Associated SC10 a worthy competitor ??

Which one is this?..2wd or All wheel drive??...the latest 4wd by area 51 is one superb piece of kit to easily rival Traxxas...same if not better IMHO.. ;)

This is 'competion' kit & top quality.

Come on...if its the 4wd spill the beans pal!!! :)

Depends how much your getting it for?....new 4x4 is £279.99 & a superb bit of kit...minor diff servo access, but hey....

I'd agree if I was paying £229, but my option is significantly less than that.

Well, having looked at several Traxxas items on ebay over the last few days (1/16th Slash/ERevo making £120 or more used, 1/10ths making £200+) i decided i'd go the SC10 route.

Whilst this is a base 2WD RTR set (17turn brushed motor, 27MHz radio set) it'll get me going, and i'll drop my spare EZRun 9T 4300kV motor, ESC and Hobbywing 2.4GHz radio set in later.

£70 less than Modelsport pricing too, which sort of swung the decision !!

2WD SCT's are more fun, in my opinion, anyway. Good price, enjoy.

Owning a Slash and SC10, I have to say the SC10 outperforms the Slash. This is keeping the things basically stock except for 10T motors and upgrades shocks on the Slash.

The Slash does make a better basher being waterproof and more durable but you get the durability at the expense of performance.

If you get the SC10 plan on upgrading the tires, the RTR ones are pretty bad.

Decided i just didn't have the space for the SC10 and it'd not been out of the box since i bought it - now moved on to new pastures courtesy of eBay.

But feeling the need for a SC truck, and more importantly a winter bashing machine, i dropped on a 1/16th Slash yesterday :(

I wouldn't sell the SC10 if it's as good as my Ultima DB...

I had some issues with it at the start, being an RTR: The pinion came loose a couple of times, and I was surprised that Kyosho tightened the slipper completely so I also ruined a spur. Other than that though it's been a lot of fun driving it! It's very tailhappy compared to 2WD buggies, but at the same time it is oversteer that's relatively easy to control. So you can either thrash it and end up backwards a couple of times and powerslide through the whole run - or you can try to push it to the limit without burning your tires, which is a real challenge ;)

As for the 1/16s, I had a 1/16 E-Revo and I loved the durability of it. However, as nice as it was it wasn't my cup of tea. The wordt thing about it was it's ability to barrel roll on tarmac (even with the brushed set I had in it) as I usually try to be cautious and not damage my cars. The best thing was that I never replaced a single part on it despite the fact that people had made frontal crashes into walls with it. It was in fact the only car I'd let other people drive because it was so tough  In the end I sold it because it didn't have enough ground clearance for snow, which was the reason I bought it in the first place: a Winter/Snow basher.

Like the Ultima DB, you shouldn't expect that durability with an SC10. Then again, the performance of these SC trucks is in a different league than the Slash (1/10) and aimed towards competitive driving as well as bashing.

SC10 was sold before Xmas. I still wonder whether it was the right thing to do but my logic was..

1. it hadn't come out of its packaging in 3 months of buying it

2. my son wasn't showing any interest in SC trucks, so it wasn't going to be a great surprise Xmas present

3. it was quite a big truck to store, and i'm running out of space !

4. my best chance of recovering my costs, after ebay fees, was to sell it in the run up to Xmas - which i'm pleased to say was the case.

I got the 1/16th Slash for less than half what the SC10 sold for and other than the ground clearance issues, has a few good points over the SC10..

1. the cost

2. size - easy to store, easy to drop in a rucksack when on a bike ride somewhere

3. its lightly used so i'm not too precious about giving it a beating

4. parts are pretty cheap, and probably won;t need many

5. when the body and wheels are battered i can convert to a e-revo if i like with a swap of arms and driveshafts.

The SC10 did really highlight one technical thing to me though - how soft its suspension felt when compressed, which now makes me wonder whether all my Tamiya buggies need lightly shock oil and even some softer springs in some cases.

Thanks for the comments BTW.

And i did manage to buy a RC10T3 too before Xmas so i'm not out of the AE fold and i have something with a bit more clearance for snow running :)

Just a idea but when you get bored with the Slash how about mounting the Bowler Shell on it ?????????/ might mean some mods but it would make a awesum runner .

I'm guessing the 1/16th slash will be too small a wheelbase or too narrow - dunno, be interesting to measure it.

looking at one the wheelbase is 206 mm , wildcat is , i think 256mm but the chassis on the slash is only a alloy plate so making a longer one is no big deal :(
