I should be going to Shizuoka in a few weeks and would REALLY love to visit the Tamiya museum. Anyone already been there? Do you need special permission or...? Anything to watch out for?

Any help is MUCH appreciated :D

you can go to the main office museum anytime, at least that's how it was when I went there. getting there from the train station is a little confusing, you have to catch a local bus to the stop in front of mitsubishi (i think) then transfer... It would be easier, though a little more expensive to take a taxi.

search "visiting tamiya" in google and check the forum post from trashmodeller...

I have been a couple of times now, the last time was during the Shizuoka Hobby Show in 2009. As you can imagine that time it was fairly crowded and it was at the end of the day so I didn't have much time. The previous time I only got to spend about 45 minutes at Tamiya HQ while killing time on my way back to Tokyo but I "did" get to see everything. As it was a normal weekday I was the only person there.

I would have liked to have spent longer and probably could have spent a couple of hours in the archive room looking at all of the statics as well as the RC's. The front lobby has some of the 1:1 cars that the models are based off, another room has current models on display and there is a small shop.

The directions on the English version of the Tamiya website http://www.tamiya.com/english/news/event/visit/visit.htm are pretty foolproof but if catching the bus and the driver doesn't understand "Mitsubishi-Iriguchi"(Entrance of Mitsubishi Plant) ask for "Keirinjo"(Cycle-race Track).

Yeah, did it about 3 years ago while in jp on a business trip. There is the main HQ, with the "Museum", attached. There is also a factory / distribution warehouse with the track across town. (as seen in the promo videos of the 70 / 80's) The people were friendly, but communication was difficult with their english as bad as my japanese. I walked from the train station, but probably better to get your hotel staff to write a directions card for you to give to the cab driver. Glad i made the effort, but some people will say you should never meet your idols!!!!!

I agree I am glad that I went but the presentation of some of the models is a bit 'ordinary'.

Isn't there a 1:1 SS there?

It wasn't when I was last there but the Bug Box Scorcher was taken to Japan and may still be at Tamiya HQ. The build thread is here.

That SS is awesome!

I've seen some photos of the RC museum and I must agree they are a bit bland...but then again, I've never even seen an original first hundred model yet. Should be interesting nontheless!

The track that is next to Rainbow 10 also has RC on display,ALL of the rc on display at both places haven`t been touched in years,SO don`t expect them to look that great.

Don`t buy from Rainbow 10 unless you can not make it to Akiharabra. Rainbow 10 charges just a little under retail. Any shop in Akiharabra has at least %20 of Japanese list.

Anyway I am sure you will enjoy yourself,it worth the time to visit.

Thanks for the tip!

Any recomendations for other good shops? I'm looking to pick up a TA02T kit and some spares/hopups for various other cars.

Go Akiharabra 4 stores youc an walk to from the station. If you are near Tokyo you can get there by train. Anyway you really only need one shop because you are buying Tamiya. Its like shopping for Coke A Cola at 7/11.

RC Champ is the easist and they sponcer Tamiyaclub so you might as well go there.

If you are going to be in Tokyo definitely visit at least one of the Akihabira shops.

A map of some of the shops can be found here.

I usually visit Champ and Super RC.

There is also the Tamiya Plamodel Factory Store in Shimbashi when in Tokyo http://www.tamiya.com/english/info/080819factory/index.htm. It is good for a look but the shops in Akihabira are cheaper.

Thank you!
