I know it's a few weeks away yet, but I'm really looking forward to a Christmas Build this year and thought I'd see if anyone else is up for a Tamiya Build Fest like we've done in the past? Plus some of us might need to get our orders in soon if we're going to get our cars and paints in time for Christmas.

I'm open to all suggestions on possible models. Obviously it must be something in the current line-up that's not hard to get hold of, and ideally at the lower end of the price range so as many as possible can join in. Also something that lends itself to custom bodywork, so that we can get as many variations as possible in the finished cars.

Anybody going to join me, and have any suggestions for possible models?

I'm going to throw out a possible for the new Honda CRX, but I don't know what the release price is likely to be yet.

It's got to be the FAV? Relatively cheap and infinitely customisable as most parts need painting. Although perhaps not the right time of year for spray painting here in the UK?! :)

I'd be up for a FAV buildathon!

But I already just built my custom Willy FAV Scorcher?!

Guess I can enter that?

I agree it's a great platform for a christmas build, but then again I still find the new CRX interesting...

Given how much moaning the vintage fraternity have given the Sand Rover re-release that would be a good basis for some collective building and modding. One of the cheapest kits too, typically £100 in the UK

I like both ideas; the OPs for the suggestion and this one for a possible candidate.

I have 9 days off at christmas for the first time in years, and no family (either side) staying with us :) . I'd be up for a build fest but I'm planning on breaking open my NIB M3 Schnitzer E30. Have an interior, roll cage and one of Beetlelover's top heads so it'll be as near as dammit like the one on the box. It'll be near stock also apart from min CVA's so no piddling around waiting for parts or trying to fabricate something myself, and I reckon that I should at least get some quality RC time on my birthday (Boxing Day) don't you?!

I'd be tempted by a Sand Rover option. Lots of custom options for the chassis as well as the body. I also love the idea of an FAV, really want one of these anyway!

Options so far, then:

  • FAV
  • CRX
  • Sand Rover

If we're going with a cheap 2wd off-road theme then there's lots more options with plenty of potential for custom work, both body and chassis:

  • Rising Fighter
  • Grasshopper
  • Mad Fighter
  • Super Fighter GR
  • Mad Bull

All of these are listed cheaper than the Sand Rover in the UK, although admittedly none are as new as the Sand Rover.

For on-road options, GoldStar are currently listing the following under £100:

  • Fiat 500 M03M
  • Nissan GTR TT01E
  • Datsun 240Z TT01E
  • Nissan Fairlady Z TT01E
  • Mini Cooper M03
  • Honda CR-Z TT01E
  • Alfa Romeo MiTo M05
  • Ford SVT Lightning TT01E

Juding by the prices above and some pre-order prices online, I think the CRX is likely to come in over £100 when it arrives on sale here, but it still sits right at the top of my Xmas Build list.

Any more thoughts?

Anyone got any more suggestions to throw into the mix? The CRX is my first choice and is now in as a bare kit at Fusion Hobbies for £122.

If we can get maybe half a dozen favourites I could open up a poll for anyone who wants to join in?

:D

Any further comments? Anyone prefer the idea of doing a specific theme instead of a spefic model? Open to all suggestions, but will probably be hitting the Buy button on the CRX soon ;)
