At the risk of asking a really obvious question....do you apply a laquer/clear coat to satin black paint? Or does that just turn it glossy?

I've done a bit of googling but opinion seems to be split, ie some say you do and others say don't. Apparently there are clear coats which can be bought that maintain the matte/satin look without turning it to gloss...anyone know of these?

sure, clearcoating is always a good idea to protect the paint. there are plenty satin or flat clearcoats available.

Tamiya has them as well. TS-79 Semi Gloss (Satin) and TS-80 Flat

Thanks for that. To be honest I can never tell the difference between satin black & a standard gloss black before the clear coat goes on. I recently painted some wheels in high gloss black but before the final clear lacquer was applied it just looked really flat.

well, if you use clearcoats it doesn't really matter what kind of paint (gloss/flat) you use anyways, as the final finish will depend on the type of clearcoat

Cheers, I shall begin experimenting. :(
