What motor have you got in there?

The model of ESC depends on your motor more than anything else. ESCs have a motor "turn limit" eg 20 turn - this means you shouldn't run motors with less than 20 turns on it.

Standard stock motor = 27 turn.

The lower the motor turn limit, the better the FETs (transistors) are in the ESC and the lower their resistance are. Naturally only the top spec ESCs (= most expensive) have the lowest turn ratings, or even 'no limit'.

If buying a new ESC, you also get to choose Reverse or no-Reverse. Top-spec models are usually Forward-only, to suit racing rules.

Of course 'no limit' is a marketing description and means it works for all currently comercially available 540 sized RC car motors, you could still possibly destroy it by connecting it to a self wound 5*5 turn or a much bigger sized motor. For the motors which make sence for a BF (not less than 18 turns) almost all modern ESCs would work fine, so you dont neeed to spend big cash, except if you plan to use it later also for other 'competition' cars...

a 17turn might be a bit too fast for your truck. The rear drivetrain isn't the stongest. I would recomend a good rebuildable stock motor.

For an ESC, buy the best one you can afford. That way you can use it with other cars. I don't know what your price range looks like but I would definetly recomend a Novak or LRP speed control. Most of the traxxas speed controls I have seen are low end and wouldn't take the current draw placed on them from a modified motor
